The Fish Store | Luxury Self-Catering | Mousehole, West Cornwall

Belonging to the same family for almost a century, this luxury self-catering coastal retreat has equal measures of style and soul. The Fish Store celebrates the beauty that a passage of time brings to a home, with its enviable position on Mousehole harbour-front being the icing on the cake.  The delights of Cornwall’s wild west are all within easy reach too, if you can tear yourself away…

A home with allure, there’s something rather special about The Fish Store in Mousehole. Maybe it’s the dreamy seaside setting, or perhaps it’s the cool, utilitarian interiors that pay homage to the building’s former life as a pilchard factory. It could be the cinema room with three-metre projector screen, or the impressive kitchen which has earned this home its very own cook book. Whatever it is, there’s something well worth going the extra mile down west when planning your next luxury break in Cornwall.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

There are five bedrooms at The Fish Store; two on the ground floor and three on the first. The master bedroom is on the first floor, featuring a super king-size zip-and-link bed and en suite shower room. Alongside this sits a second super king-size zip-and-link bedroom and a king-size bedroom boasting its own bathtub. The first floor also benefits from a family bathroom with separate shower. Downstairs, the ground floor comprises a third zip-and-link bedroom, a king-size bedroom and bathroom with steam shower - providing the perfect tonic to an exhilarating day spent boating or stomping the coast path.

With its high beamed ceilings and lofty living spaces, The Fish Store possesses an abundance of space (quite a rarity in Mousehole) which spills outside towards the ocean. The sweet stone courtyard will be a dream during Cornwall’s long, balmy summers – enhanced only by Cornish bubbly and barbecued crab from the harbour. From renowned poets to the likes of Vogue; literarians have celebrated Mousehole’s magnetising village charm since the heyday of the British seaside holiday, when Dylan Thomas famously pronounced it ‘the loveliest village in England’. Swimming in the bay, scouring the rock pools for star fish and admiring the Christmas lights twinkle over the harbour will provide families with memories to cherish forever.

For Relaxation

West Cornwall has a unique charm and artsy vibe that makes it a haven for creative types. Tight, meandering streets lead through tiny quintessential fishing villages to sheltered coves and a wild ocean, never failing to inspire visitors. Mosey around art galleries in St Ives, take a dip in Kynance Cove and catch an open-air performance of a Shakespearean classic at Minack Theatre under a canopy of stars. Back at The Fish Store, children will love to cosy up with an adventure movie in the cinema room, leaving grownups to enjoy good wine and spirited games of backgammon by the fire.

The Fish Store has garage parking for one small to average-sized car and there is additional parking in the public car park (£3 per day). The cook’s kitchen is superbly equipped, with all the essentials and more. The laundry room has a washing machine and dryer.

Style: The vintage-utility kitchen best exemplifies The Fish Store’s idiosyncratic interior style. Arty flourishes combine with industrial undertones, resulting in a space that feels stylishly un-styled.

Our Take

Property Owners Zach & Henry say

The house was built in 1899 to process the pilchards (Cornish sardines) which swarmed around Mounts Bay. In 1939 our grandparents Betty and Edwin fled Paris and the impending war, and made The Fish Store their home. We lovingly renovated our Cornish home in 2009 and offer you a very warm welcome!
