Luxury self-catering beach house in Portwrinkle, Whitsand Bay

The sleepy fishing village of Portwrinkle and its vast expanse of open ocean are what combine to provide the serenest of backdrops for this luxury self-catering beach house in south Cornwall. A wildflower grass roof and sleek glass exterior help this modern home merge into the landscape, with minimalist interiors of glossy whites and warm greys ensuring the focus is all on the sea views. Serpentine is a cool, calm and collected retreat tucked away in Cornwall's aptly named 'forgotten' corner - the perfect homestay for those lusting after luxury and tranquility on the south coast.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

With its unique wraparound design, the contemporary eco-friendly design encompasses four glass-fronted, en suite bedrooms to ensure no one misses out on a sea view. The circular master suite has a raised king-size bed and luxurious wet room with freestanding bath and open rainfall shower tucked behind a partial-height wall. Mirroring the master, the remaining three bedrooms all feature king-size beds (one of which is zip-and-link) and partial-height headboards concealing spring-fed rainfall shower rooms. There is also an outdoor shower for sun-kissed bodies and sandy toes.

Half an acre of coastal gardens allow guests to take-in the mesmeric sights and sounds of the waves which ebb and flow below the house. The nook at the bottom of the garden is the best spot for a surreptitious glass of bubbly at sunset, whilst children will prefer to hide under the parasols on sunny days drinking jugs of homemade lemonade and playing boardgames to their little hearts’ content. Steps lead from the house straight onto the footpath to reach the quirkily named Finnygook Beach and sandy crescent of Hoodny Cove below, offering endless amounts of beachy fun for all.

For Relaxation

The 17th century fishing village of Portwrinkle in which Serpentine resides is as quaint as it sounds, nestled half way between Looe and Saltash on the south coast of Cornwall. The Port Eliot Festival is a must for artsy Bohemian types (taking place every summer), whilst the mild climate offers garden lovers a smorgasbord of sites to visit, such as the spellbinding grounds of Antony House which famously featured in Disney's Alice in Wonderland film. After the day's adventures, the garden's private "G&T alcove" is perfect for sundowners, whilst the suspended fire will provide a comforting, crackling soundtrack for storm-watching on the sumptuous L-shaped sofas.

There is parking for four cars. Please note, there is a slight drop at the edge of the coastal garden so children should be supervised. The contemporary kitchen is perfectly outfitted for luxury self-catering breaks, with a large electric oven, gas hob and fridge freezer.

Our Take

Property Owner Alisha says

As holiday makers, we jumped at the chance to build a distinctive house without dominating the coastal location. I immediately switch off when we arrive and with the sounds of crashing waves always in the distance, staying here makes me happy. Now I want other families to enjoy our Cornish home.
