Introduction

To-be-weds who know that anything is possible, meet The Lost Music Hall. At this luxury elopement venue near Totnes, there’s no such thing as one-size-fits-all; counting orchards, walled gardens, and a grand music room among its ceremony spaces, this remote wedding destination is a truly bespoke offering. Couples can have a ceremony in the light-filled house or verdant garden in the presence of up to 200 guests, while traditionalists can opt for a church ceremony in one of three nearby parishes, each less than ten minutes away, before returning to this country house venue for an evening of confetti-strewn celebrations. In a nod to the Italian gardens next door, set up long banquet tables festooned with eucalyptus and peonies for a classic wedding breakfast, or bring in food trucks for a backyard jubilee of enormous proportions.

Inside

With three fantastically large rooms (sleeping up to twelve people if you would like to make use of all the beds), The Lost Music Hall is a luxury self-catering home with an oh-so cool twist. Enchantment trickles in through huge picture windows and across the oak parquet floors of this enigmatic residence; as if a William Morris-approved Arts and Crafts museum met a collegiate library, this architectural treasure is one of the best kept secrets on the British wedding scene. A glorious three-day stay will be on the cards for private hires, but consider mini-mooning at the manor for a full week to give you enough time to weave your story into the fabric of the estate. Behind doric columns and under domed ceilings, gather with your dearest ones for a wedding-eve reception, fending off cold feet by the open fire, and sneaking last kisses before the big day.

Outside

Oh, sweet whimsicality. For you, home went from being a place to a person a long time ago. And yet, here is a matrimonial home for the ages; a place for shared vows, swapped rings, and memories made against a mossy orange façade. At The Lost Music Hall, magic is all around. Outside, gardens explode in all directions and foliage creeps up the walls in a backdrop-worthy flurry. Set in a secluded South Hams valley, on the historical Great Ambrook estate near Totnes, The Lost Music Hall is a place where anything can happen. The poet on the guest list might recount an Ode to the Newlyweds from the grand Italianate terrace, a feel-good folk band might lead the conga-line with a mandolin, you might kiss under the light of a thousand stars as the milky way pierces through Devon’s dark skies. All that’s certain is this: it had to be The Lost Music Hall.

From the owner

“We bought the property and moved here in 2019. We have since met many individuals who have connections to the estate, each sharing stories about the house and the families that have enjoyed it as their home. Arthur Graham’s historian and biographer talks fondly about the special atmosphere here, and it does indeed have a tranquil, magical ambience.”

From the owner

There are endless enchanting spaces throughout the venue. The Lost Music Hall itself was a bold addition to The Lost Manor, made in the early 1900s by Arthur Graham. Designed by local architect T. H. Lyon, the building was originally an enormous single-height chapel-like structure with a vaulted ceiling, constructed in part to house an enormous organ that was specially made and shipped from New York.

Graham was a society bachelor who entertained extensively and there are many stories of the guests that enjoyed time here in the hidden valley. I can imagine the gatherings with guests spilling onto the grand Italianate terraces on a summer evening enjoying the view across the grounds with its ancient trees and tiny river. To host bespoke weddings here feels true to the bones of the building.

Holding up the tradition, we've hosted several music events since we’ve been here.  Notably a benefit concert with some amazing folk musicians and a chamber music event as part of a festival organised by Ashburton Arts including a world-class string quartet.

There is a really magical quality here; there are so many myths and stories about the decadent events in the manor and music hall. It is such a wonderful place to come together with friends and family.
