Atticus
Burford, Oxfordshire, The Cotswolds, UK
Treacle-toned Cotswold stone, iron gates and heavy antique double doors hint at this Grade-II listed home’s colourful past. Once a courthouse and later a jail, Atticus can be found jostling amongst a row of period buildings dating back to Tudor times at the upper end of Burford's bonnie High Street. Now magnificently restored in all its glory, luxury self-catering holidays in the Cotswolds don't get much more golden than this.
Introduction
Locked in a neat chain of attractive honey-hued cottages in pride of place at the end of Burford's iconic High Street, Atticus is a sanctuary for groups of families and friends wanting a mix of of buzzing village life and sublime privacy. Steeped in style and bursting with original features, including the tremendous old court room, guests are promised a luxury self-catering Cotswolds escape. Look forward to leisurely strolls through Burford and and see how the antique boutiques, quaint tearooms and historic townhouses peddle oodles of nostalgia throughout the ancient wool town.
Inside
Four timelessly designed bedrooms all boast views over the terraced garden, each exquisitely finished to ensure every member of the party has somewhere luxurious to lay their head. The en suite king-size bedroom with bath and separate shower can be found on the ground floor, whilst the first floor is home to the second king-size bedroom with en suite shower. At the top of the house, the third king-size bedroom and the super king-size zip-and-link bedroom together share a stylish monochrome shower room.
Outside
Step through Atticus' stained glass back door to discover the private terraced garden, where a babbling water feature creates a soothing alfresco oasis during summertime antics. Sink into the rattan chairs and lose yourself to your new favourite book or sip on Cotswolds Brew cider (brewed in nearby Bourton-on-the-Water) and enjoy a feast of local delicacies. When the sun dips below the skyline of wobbly Cotswolds cottage rooftops, gather the party to share anecdotes around the glow of the fire pit.

From the owner
“We were delighted when we found the house and just love spending time with our daughters and grandchildren here. The house is light, free-flowing and, whilst Grade-II listed, has a modern twist hidden behind the traditional Cotswolds stone façade.”

Atticus was designed by William Wilkinson, a prominent Oxfordshire architect famed for the Randolph Hotel in Oxford. After beginning life as a police station and county courthouse, it served as a magistrates court until the 1970s then later an office space. Today our beautiful Grade-II listed home includes a luxurious drawing room (the old court room) of some 30ft long with three picture windows overlooking The Hill. The former Judges Chambers is now the TV/games room.
The interior design is inspired by the tradition of English country house elegance and lifestyle. We worked with London -based interior designer Michael Collins to create rooms that have been gracefully and eloquently designed with striking simplicity but showing attention to lighting, furnishings, fabrics and personal comfort.
Beyond Atticus, the Cotswolds is without doubt one of the most beautiful areas in the UK. It's the largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England and Wales and is renowned for the warmth and charm of its stone buildings, gentle rolling grasslands and woods. We enjoy discovering new villages - many of which have hardly changed since the medieval wool trade in the 15th and 16th centuries!

Guest Testimonials
Thank you for saving our Christmas after our booking was cancelled with another agent! The house was simply wonderful and beautifully decorated for Christmas, which was added to the location being dressed and festive too. We have had an amazing few days including our visits to see the Blenheim Palace Christmas lights, which were brilliant. We also had a great lunch at the Double Red Duke! Thank you once again!
We could not have been more thrilled with our stay here. The welcome was amazing, and the wow factor of the home is undeniable. The location is fantastic for various shops and eateries. We recommend The Lamb, and The Royal Oak! Everything is well appointed and we were comfortable at all times. As a multi-generational family, we found we had enough space to escape, and that the bedrooms were quiet and peaceful from the rest of the house. Overall, just a brilliant experience. Thank you.
This has been a wonderful family holiday, largely because of how beautiful and spacious Atticus is. The welcome hamper got us off to a very good start for breakfast, and we loved venturing out for dinner, and to the High Street in Broadway for high tea at The Lygon Arms. Lots of eateries in town for more usual dinners, but our most memorable night was celebrating a birthday with in-house catering done by Tailor Made Top Nosh. We hope we can return again very soon!
Atticus in Burford is an exemplary property. We were met by the host who made us feel very welcome. The kitchen and bedrooms were really great but the lounge is exceptional. Moreover, it is in a wonderful location close to many pubs, restaurants and local boutique shops.
What a beautiful, beautiful house. We are so grateful to be here for our first trip outside of London since before lockdown. We´re so glad we chose to spend a week here. Thank you for taking care of us so brilliantly. It has been a real treat and such a special holiday.
A gem of a house. Thank you for sharing it and for having us here, creating great family memories. Your attention to detail makes everything so welcoming. We will be back!
This is my first time in a Unique Homestay property and I am so impressed, Atticus is amazing and it has made me want to book my next Unique Homestay already! The house manager is absolutely wonderful, it was such a special time and we appreciated all of her hard work in making it such a beautiful home. The property is done out like a five-star hotel and is spotless, the bedlinens are luxurious, the furniture is practical but also elegant and everything is so well thought through for a comfortable stay. I absolutely loved our stay and have already recommended it to several friends.
We´ve had a wonderful weekend spent together with family for a really special birthday celebration, such precious memories made in this gorgeous house in beautiful Burford. Thank you.
What a wonderful stay for a special birthday celebration! Such a beautiful house and such comfy beds! Storm Dennis didn’t dampen our spirits as it was a great excuse to snuggle up by the fire! Thank you for being so warm and welcoming. We will be recommending the house to all our friends and family!
Atticus is everything and more than we expected. Such an amazing house full of character and that special homely feel, which was so appropriate for the celebration of our sons 30th Birthday.
Atticus is a mixture of history and modernity, everything in it is perfect. The interior design, the cleanliness, the attention to detail, everything made us feel at home. We didn´t want to leave! We have stayed with Unique Homestays before and it´s honestly always the best service we receive compared to other agents worldwide. You should expand your services across the globe, the Unique Homestays team and the housekeepers are very helpful. You are the best! Thank you again for everything.
This is the second time we have booked with Unique Homestays and have been very happy both times. We will definitely book again the next time we return to the UK. Atticus is an absolutely beautiful house and the host was very welcoming when we arrived. She was able to give us lots of great tips and advice about the local area, as well as making sure our stay would be a comfortable and relaxing one! Thank you so much for great service from start to finish! See you again soon!
We had the most enjoyable stay at Atticus despite the rain! We were able to lounge around the house without getting in each other´s way and the only regret was that we didn´t get to spend any time in the garden due to the weather. The vision of sitting out there in the sunshine with an Aperol Spritz disappeared into the clouds! A highlight of the week was the wonderful dinner provided by Paul Bernard, an outstanding experience! This is our second booking with Unique Homestays and as with the previous stay, everything was simply spot on.
What a perfect place to spend my 65th birthday, it has been amazing from start to finish. Your house is superb and I wish it was ours! This has been our first weekend away with our new grandchildren and we have just had the most enjoyable time. We also used Paul from Tailor Made Top Nosh on my birthday - we have used him before, and we would highly recommend. Thank you once again, we will be back.
What a wonderful home in a gorgeous village, a beautifully finished house, and so warm and welcoming. This home is a credit to its owners and they really have thought of everything. We have had a really lovely time and will be back in the near future. A fantastic host also, thank you so much.
This house is so much fun! There is no better way to begin the day than by walking into the distinguished, old courtroom with the sun beaming in through the windows and a cup of coffee in hand. Each room has its own personality and simple attraction, inviting a question or two about its past and stories. The hill itself leads to more fun, strolling through the streets of Burford. It is a bit of a trip into a fable of yesteryear. Thank you!
Atticus is a stunning property. We loved the bathroom tiles and the gorgeous windows. Such a brilliant location; so close to the town but quiet. It is an amazing house and so beautifully decorated. Thank you.
The host was incredible and helped so very much, she was so kind! We had an amazing stay and spent most of our time in the 2nd floor living area when we were at the house. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire home though, and we had many games of scrabble by the fires in the dining and living areas. Thank you for a wonderful visit.
We loved this wonderful home in this pretty village! With roaring fires and glasses full, we celebrated a family Christmas. Three generations of the family cosily nestled here for everyone´s delight; from New Zealand, USA, Ireland and England. We enjoyed roasted meats from the local butchers, a full board of cheeses from the local dairy and granny playing the piano! We all had a wonderful time. Atticus was so wonderfully warm, light and comfortable. Thank you to the host; we´re grateful for your hospitality and your delicious welcome basket!
Atticus is a lovely property and sits proudly at the top of Burford Hill. The house is brimming with character and has been furnished and cared for beautifully. We arrived to a crackling fire, a fantastic welcome pack with chilled Bubbly, it doesn´t get much better than that! We will be back.
What a wonderful house! Every room is decorated with such attention to detail. As a family of nine with three children, we felt at home and really enjoyed our stay. Atticus was always lovely and warm with plenty of logs for the fire. The village is beautiful and so friendly. The host, who greeted us on arrival was so helpful and friendly, she really spent time making us feel at home. We will be telling all our friends about this wonderful house. We would love to come back one day.
As soon as we walked through the front door we knew we had chosen well. As we were shown around by the host, the house kept surprising us at every corner. The courtroom is a real "wow" feature. Lovely furniture, furnishings and divine beds. We slept very well and had a great time.
As South Africans, Atticus has been such a spoil. We have really enjoyed the welcome basket and the housekeeper has been extremely helpful. We are now leaving refreshed, recharged and full of appreciation. Thank you for making our time in Burford so special, we are very grateful!
Thank you so much for an absolutely incredible weekend away. What an amazing country escape. The house is immaculate and we felt immediately at home. The outside space is perfect to have an evening glass of wine and catches the sun in the morning for breakfast outside. Being so close to the village was very convenient yet so quiet! We will definitely be visiting again.
Rarely have we stayed in a holiday rental that quite simply has it all. A fabulous house, gorgeous interiors and the perfect location. I am renovating a new house soon, and will be stealing lots of ideas from here. Thank you for a fantastic week.
We had a fantastic stay at such a beautiful property. The house is simply stunning and we can´t wait to book again to come back. We loved Burford too, such a lovely village and so dog-friendly.
