Often called the 'gateway to the Cotswolds’, this yellow-stone town is all Oxfordshire charm, from its tiny antique shops to the scenic surrounds.
Hugging the south side of the Cotswolds, this popular 16th century market town has history steeped within its old walls, in the four-arch medieval bridge, and in its half-timbered houses. The town of Burford was once an important meeting place for wool merchants, and there is still much evidence of this trade in the local museum and historic buildings: a row of weathered almshouses is firmly on the map for places of historic interest, along with The Lamb Inn, one of the oldest pubs around.
For outings, Batsford Arboretum, Blenheim Palace and Westonbirt Arboretum are all on the nearby map for garden and history lovers; cyclists can pedal the 17-mile Windrush Valley Cycle Router between Witney and Northleach. Modern boutiques now line the little streets, along with a good range of classic Cotswold tearooms and cafés up and down the pretty high street. If ancient relics are on the list, the town's antiques fair sets up at the end of July, offering a variety of treats to the discerning guest.
