Winterfell | Luxury Self-Catering Lakeside House | Lake Windermere

In a land far, far away, nestled between the majestic mountains and forested hills of the Lake District, lies this luxury private lake house set in six acres of enchanting grounds. Bordering Lake Windermere's sparkling southern shoreline and with only singing birds and friendly stags for neighbours, Winterfell promises a truly spellbinding escape.

Luxury private home on Lake Windermere, The Lake District

Winterfell will be a sure journey’s end for those looking for luxury in the Lake District. Occupying a secluded location just a short drive from the glittering waters of Lake Windermere, this stunning private home near Lakeside offers luxury dog-friendly accommodation in the most enchanting of settings. Surrounded by woodland and draped with ivy, Winterfell's hunting lodge-style Lakeland stone façade will entice goose bumps from the moment of arrival. Inside, rustic French flourishes melt into a snowy white colour palette, evoking an ambience of Narnia-esque magic where romance reigns.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Admire the owners’ striking collection of black and white photography as you wind up the staircase to reach the first floor where rolltop bathtubs, ornate fireplaces and Rococo beds dressed in crisp white linens tell a story of old-fashioned romance. Six decadently dreamy double bedrooms include one en suite shower room, one en suite bathroom (to the king-size master), an additional shower room and family bathroom with separate shower. There is also a ground floor WC. Both the young and old are guaranteed a blissful night’s sleep under Winterfell’s spell of peace and quiet.

Like all the best fairy-tale homes, Winterfell is surrounded by beautiful walled gardens which spill out onto four acres of private meadows. Children will love to play games on the lawn and pluck apples from the fruit trees, truly embracing the rural idyll of country house living. Balmy summer days are best spent with a good book in hand, toes dangled in the cool, trickling stream with a melody of birdsong creating the soundtrack to the perfect afternoon. Pick from two al fresco dining areas for evening feasts in the great outdoors, before finishing the day snuggled up by the embers of the fire pit under a blanket of twinkling stars - don't forget the marshmallows!

For Relaxation

It's no wonder the Lake District attracts over 15 million visitors every year; boasting panoramas to stir the emotions of even the most seasoned travellers. Bookworms will delight in visiting the area where Beatrix Potter took her literary inspiration, whilst adventurous types can embrace all that the rugged landscape has on offer including gorge walking, rock climbing and sailing. One of the best ways to admire the views is by lake cruise, taking passengers on a gentle voyage past mountain scenery, secluded bays and wooded islands. For that special occasion, really push the boat out by combining a private charter with a Champagne lunch on Lake Windermere.

There is private parking for six cars. The well-equipped farmhouse-style kitchen is a country chic dream, featuring double oven Aga, microwave, fridge and dishwasher plus washing machine, tumble dryer and American fridge freezer in utility room.

Our Take

Property Owner George says

My wife was born near the Lake District and spent many happy days here until she moved to London in her teens. We continued to visit with our children and realised our dream in 2007, buying our own holiday home in the Lakes. Above all we cherish joyful times staying in the house and hope you do too.

Out & About

Discover places to see and things to do whilst in and around Windermere, Cumbria to truly enhance your stay come rain or shine!

Ulverston A fine example of an old market town, Ulverston is a labyrinth of cobbled streets and old buildings set in the centre of the Furness peninsula. A quirky attraction is the Laurel and Hardy Museum, housed within the beautiful 1920s Roxy Cinema. The town is also the start of the 70-mile Cumbrian Way and home to the world's shortest, deepest and widest canal.

Festival Fun Ulverston is often called the "festival town", with events taking place all throughout the year. From live music to comedy, art and food; join in the local festivities and have yourself a good old knees up! A highlight is the Dickensian Christmas festival, where visitors are encouraged to don their most festive attire and join in.

On the Literary Trail No visit to the Lake District is complete without a visit to the the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction complete with Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle-Duck, Squirrel Nutkin and all the gang. Look out for Mr McGregor!

Swallows and Amazons Fans of the Swallows and Amazons stories will enjoy taking a boat cruise around the places surrounding Coniston Water which Arthur Ransome used to populate the imaginary lake of his books, including Wild Cat Island.

Fishing The Lake District offers great fishing opportunities with breathtaking scenery. A site of Special Scientific Interest because of its international importance as a wetland, Esthwaite Water has a large population of wild birds and in the summer the fisherfolk among you could be competing with the ospreys that visit the lake.

Turrets and Towers Take a visit to the mock-Gothic Wray Castle which sits on the shores of Lake Windermere. The grounds are open to the public and are well worth visiting to see the specimen trees; wellingtonia, redwood, gingkoa, weeping lime, and varieties of beech. Dalton Castle is also well worth a visit; a 14th-century tower built to assert the authority of the Abbot of Furness Abbey.

The rustic country kitchen provides everything you need to show off your culinary prowess to family and friends. Enjoy informal breakfasts perched on window seat in the kitchen beside the warmth of the Aga. For evening meals, gather the party around the main dining table, where the vintage French chandelier and garden views provide a memorable setting for celebratory suppers.

In-House Cuisine

If you'd rather spend your break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for you and your party (on prior request and subject to an additional cost).

Eating Out

Whether you crave a high-end fine dining experience or a more relaxed gastro pub lunch, there are numerous places to eat around Lake Windermere and the surrounding towns and villages. The Drunken Duck Inn comes highly recommended for imaginative food in a relaxed atmosphere. Or for an upscale menu of seasonal fare, book a table at Simon Rogan's iconic riverside restaurant, L'Enclume.
