Ellesmera Mill | Luxury Self-Catering Millhouse | Dartmouth, Devon

400-year-old Ellesmera Mill is a bewitching blend of grace and rusticity, chock-full of old-world charm. This luxury self-catering millhouse and its romantic setting offer an enchanting destination for that out-of-the-ordinary escape. Set near Dartmouth in the sought-after South Hams, a gentle stroll through the valley leads to the sheltered cove of Blackpool Sands - one of south Devon's most beautiful beaches.

Luxury self-catering with hot tub in Dartmouth, South Hams

A haven of tranquillity, this luxury self-catering millhouse promises to endlessly enrapture all who step into its world of storybook charm. Inside Ellesmera Mill it's all open fires, white washed beams and rough stone walls, whilst the garden is filled with fluttering butterflies, mature trees, swaying hammocks and stepping stones leading to a wood-fired hot tub. The dreamy south Devon coast is almost within touching distance too, with Blackpool Sands just a short walk down the country lane.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

The bedrooms and bathrooms are a blissful marriage of modern and rustic. The horseshoe-shaped first floor features a bathroom with roll top bath and Moroccan plaster shower, plus a double bedroom of bright whites and green garden views. Up again lies the master bedroom and, reached via a second staircase, is another double and single bedroom sharing access to a Jack-and-Jill bathroom. In the dining room wing is a large, airy first floor bedroom which flaunts huge wooden shutters, a cast iron double and separate single bed. There is an additional ground floor shower room and also an outside shower to cool off post-sauna.

Old mill stone steps lead from the formal dining room onto the deck, where a zinc-topped dining table invites guests to enjoy starlit feast nights. The gardens are filled with delicate wildflowers and big shady trees, all enhanced by the pacifying sound of the trickling (unfenced) stream once used to power the mill. Exposed bulb garlands set a romantic ambience in the linhay, which offers a private lounging area bedecked with reindeer hides and a roaring woodburner. A wood-fired hot tub is tucked-away behind the house, offering the perfect place to stargaze by night, or absorb the scents of this magical garden.

For Relaxation

If you can tear yourself away from Blackpool Sands, family day trips to Salcombe, Hope Cove and Bantham beach should be next on the holiday itinerary. Between the pretty pastel-hued town Dartmouth and its bohemian sister Totnes, there are a wealth of galleries and independent boutiques for creative types to explore. Back at Ellesmera Mill, children can run wild counting butterflies and making flower crowns, leaving grown-ups to pad around the garden between the sauna, hammocks and steamy hot tub. After dark, the gentleman's club themed cinema room makes a fun and atmospheric arena for the evening's entertainment.

There is private parking for two to three cars. Please note, access to the house is down a narrow lane. Ellesmera's rustic farmhouse style-kitchen is well-equipped with an Aga, electric oven, fridge freezer, dishwasher and microwave. A washing machine and tumble dryer can be found in the utility room.

Style: With a touch of rural Devon charm, this restored mill combines the finely polished with the charmingly weathered. Most striking is the juxtaposition of the moody cinema room and fresh white living spaces.

Our Take

Property Owner Tanya says

Sleeping to the sound of the stream in the garden and enjoying the tranquillity of the ancient valley surroundings, strolling down the lane as the children try to identify the wildflowers on the way, then swimming in the sea and having brunch at the beach cafè... all makes for a perfect day.

Out & About

Discover places to see and things to do whilst in and around , Devon to truly enhance your stay come rain or shine!

The South Hams Beaches With 25 beaches to choose from in the South Hams, you could visit a different beach every day for over three weeks! Nearby Bigbury, Blackpool Sands and Challaborough are all ‘Blue Flag’ beaches. Bantham is a Marine Conservation Society recommended beach with turquoise rock pools and golden sand dunes to explore, as well as being great for surfing and windsurfing. Beautiful Bigbury-on-Sea and Thurlestone have wide expanses of flat golden sand, while Hallsands is a sheltered, shingle cove. Hope Cove, once frequented by smugglers, is a pretty fishing village with two sandy beaches and shipwrecks.

South Devon Day Tripping If you fancy a day out with a difference, visit Burgh Island which is just a five-minute stroll across the beach at Bigbury-on-Sea - at high tide you can catch a ride on the unique sea tractor which transports passengers through the waves. This small rugged island has a fascinating history. Also worth visiting are Dartmouth castle, Dartington Hall and Start Point Lighthouse.

Woodlands Adventure Park Devon's largest theme park, here you can find rides and attractions as well as indoor and outdoor play. Most impressive is their farm zoo which includes a goat mountain, reptile house, meerkat retreat and breath-taking falconry displays. Oodles of fun for families all ages, come rain or shine.

Take to the Water For a scenic and relaxing afternoon, take a boat trip on the River Dart from Totnes to Dartmouth. Or, the more adventurous can take to the waves with a surf lesson at Bantham beach. Discovery Surf School are a local family-run surf school who teach all levels of surfing, stand up paddle boarding and coasteering depending on requirements. The closest beach Blackpool Sands is best for kayaking, offering a unique viewpoint from which to admire this glorious stretch of coast.

Nearest Beaches Blackpool Sands is less than ten minutes' walk from the property, with Bigbury, Batham, Hope Cove and Salcombe all within easy reach by car.

The open-plan kitchen dining room is very much the heart of this beautiful old mill, where the whole family can get involved in preparing supper - think Aga-cooked casseroles and traditional Devon splits. In summer, throw open the doors which lead directly from the formal dining area into the garden, where a third table awaits.

In-House Cuisine

If you'd rather spend your luxury self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for your party (on request and subject to an additional cost).

Eating Out

Fresh Devon fodder fills the local menus. From fresh Start Bay lobster to succulent Devon beef roast dinners washed down with Totnes ales, guests will be spoilt for choice. Seafood lovers should try the Venus cafè's garlicky crab bisque, or head to The Seahorse for charcoal-roasted fish served up on Dartmouth's waterside. For something a little different, Bantham's quirky Gastrobus is well worth a visit, bringing great street food to this glorious golden beach since 2012.
