Luxury self-catering holiday home near Salcombe, Devon

A land of boats and boutiques, palm trees and proms; it's easy to see why Devon's South Hams Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is such a desirable destination for holidays by the sea. Dusky Cottage is equidistant between the yachting havens of Kingsbridge and Salcombe, set on an idyllic country lane leading down to the golden bay of Hope Cove. Push open the sky-blue gate and you'll be smitten. This 250-year-old luxury self-catering cottage is sure to capture the hearts of the entire family.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

With its four-poster bed, the master bedroom is straight out of a storybook, and sits alongside two twin bedrooms - all of which enjoy far-reaching southerly vistas of rolling hills. One of the twins features an en suite shower room, whilst the other bedrooms share the family bathroom with its gorgeous claw-foot tub. Perfect for the grandparents, the ruby red and royal blue guest suite is on the ground floor and has an adjoining shower room.

After fresh coffee and sugar-dusted pastries on the terrace, take a short drive down the lane to discover the tiny hub of Hope Cove. Here you'll find a pint-size harbour, gorgeous sandy bay and smattering of delightful eateries tucked between undeveloped cliffs. A day of barefoot adventures will have you yearning for the comfort of the cottage come dusk, where a bubbling wooden hot tub and fire pit await.

For Relaxation

Long a hotspot for the chic sailing set, local town Kingsbridge is the perfect English market town set around its own little estuary. Family outings to the golden dunes of Bantham and the swish sailing Mecca of Salcombe should be high on the agenda. Day trip to Overbecks - a hidden paradise of subtropical gardens that was once the seaside home of inventor Otto Overbeck. Admire his quirky collections, explore the banana garden and meander through the woodland to soak up spectacular panoramas of unspoilt coastline.

There is parking for four cars. With everything you would want from a traditional cottage, the kitchen has a racing-green Aga, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, conventional oven and hob. The laundry room has a washing machine and dryer, along with a second fridge/freezer to house all those Devon splits and clotted cream you'll want to take home. Due to the thatched roof, Dusky Cottage has two gas fires. There are low ceilings throughout, especially in the kitchen.

Our Take

Property Owners Stephen and Sarah say

The cottage is best described as a place to chill; whether chatting by the Aga in the kitchen, sipping Champagne in the hot tub or just dozing in the summerhouse listening to the cows mooing in the surrounding fields - it´s difficult not to relax here.

Out & About

Discover places to see and things to do whilst in and around Hope Cove, Devon to truly enhance your stay come rain or shine!

Hit the Beach Flaunting an idyllic position in the heart of the South Hams, some of Devon's finest beaches lie within easy reach. Hope Cove is just a mile and a half down the lane or head to Bantham beach just a short drive away, home to a large beach with excellent surfing. Little ones will enjoy crabbing on the quay at Salcombe, where all the gear can be purchased from the local fishmonger (we've heard bacon is the local crabs' favourite!).

Visit a Famous Zoo Famously inspiring the story of the hit film 'We Bought a Zoo' staring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johanssen, Dartmoor Zoo is family-friendly and delivers an enjoyable day out. Animals include tigers, lions, cheetahs and jaguars, in addition to collections of birds, reptiles and amphibians. The small nature of the zoo allows visitors to get up-close to the animals and daily talks ensure a visit here is educational too.

Sample Salcombe Gin The Salcombe Gin Distillery bottles their smooth, hand-distilled gin using carefully selected botanicals blended with pure Dartmoor water. The carefully curated spirit has a unique and elegant flavour which tastes even better when enjoyed alfresco, overlooking the estuary on a summer's day. Curious gin connoisseurs should book in to the gin school, where adults can use the distilling laboratory to craft their very own bottle.

On-the-Water Fun Idyllically positioned on the banks of the Salcombe/Kingsbridge Estuary, Waterborn is a stand-up paddle-boarding school hiring out equipment, giving expert tuition and guided SUP tours to those looking to explore the area from the water. Occupying a sheltered position and stunning outlook, stand-up paddle-boarding yoga can also be enjoyed here, offering a unique way to relax whilst on holiday in the South Hams.

Aune Valley Farm Shop in nearby Loddiswell is brimming with locally produced seasonal fayre. With a butchers, delicatessen and broad range of fruit and vegetables, you won’t need to look far to find some of the finest produce available in the South Hams. Pick fresh rosemary from the garden and roast Devon lamb in the Aga for a delicious Sunday lunch with all the family.

In-House Cuisine

If you'd rather spend your luxury self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for you and your party (on prior request and subject to an additional cost).

Eating Out

Boasting one of the finest seaside settings, the Hope and Anchor is within walking distance and well worth a visit. The gastro pub sits just above Hope Cove's sheltered sandy bay and is particularly well-known for its staple fish and chips dish. Slightly further afield near Salcombe is The Winking Prawn. Famous for its summer evening barbecues, this restaurant has a location and reputation to rival the Hope and Anchor!
