Large self-catering house in the South Hams, Devon

Introduction

Oh, the stories this house could tell! Built in the 16th century from Devonshire granite and slate-stone quarried nearby, this Georgian Grade II listed home has stood strong in statement and stature throughout the ages. From a tenanted estate, to thriving 178-acre farm, to family-home for 22, there is little these walls haven’t seen. Now, Maberly offers an uncomplicated luxury self-catering escape to Kingsbridge and the South Hams where nothing matters other than barefoot wanders, trips to the beach and stargazing.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Calm and filled with soft fabrics and mellow hues, the master bedroom has a super king-size bed and Jack and Jill en suite with bath and shower. The first floor is also home to two more king-size bedrooms, one with en suite shower room. Up the gorgeous Chinese lattice Chippendale staircase to the second floor are two super king-size zip-and-link bedrooms which share the property's second Jack and Jill en suite bath and shower. At the top of Maberly on the third floor there is one double and one Goldilocks bedroom with three single beds, perfect for family bedtime stories; both have en suite shower rooms.

Outside

One acre of restful gardens surrounding Maberly offers a peaceful refuge in rural Devon. Play hide and seek with little ones in the colourful walled garden, recline on thick Moroccan fabrics on the manicured lawn and sip sweet sundowners in the evening light at the front of the house. For guests who cannot bear to stay still, the lawn is just as good for croquet and garden games as it is for afternoon naps.

For Relaxation

Ease into the day with a steaming coffee on the al fresco dining area, before packing bags and cars with swimsuits and walking boots, ready for a south Devon adventure. Nearby East Prawle, Devon’s often forgotten but wild peninsula, has dramatic coastal trails leading to small white-sand beaches with turquoise lagoons, so often uninhabited by anyone else. On the way home, stop in the village pub, The Pig’s Nose, for a glimpse inside one of Devon’s most characterful inns. On cooler, or less active days, cosy down in one of Maberly's sink-into armchairs, nose in a good book, and let imagination turn the world on its head.

Practicalities

The large family farmhouse kitchen has a double-range cooker, dishwasher, fridge, small freezer and that all-important Nespresso machine. There is also a utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer. Parents are advised to take care and supervise children around both the house and gardens, as they include some steep stairs and slopes. When dining together as a group of more than 10 guests, it is necessary to sit at two separate tables in Maberly (perfect for children who want to chat amongst themselves!)

Out & About

Discover places to see and things to do whilst in and around Chillington, Devon to truly enhance your stay come rain or shine!

Kingsbridge This thriving market town is located at the head of the Kingsbridge estuary, a haven for sailors and wading birds alike. There is a thriving local community, lots of individual shops selling local produce and products, cafes, restaurants and pubs, a museum and several art galleries. The farmers’ market comes to town on the first and third Saturday mornings of each month with a cornucopia of local produce on sale in the town square.

History and Adventure If you fancy a day out with a difference then visit Burgh Island which is just a five-minute stroll across the sandy, life-guarded beach at Bigbury-on-Sea (at high tide, the famously unique sea tractor transports passengers through the waves instead). This small rugged island has a fascinating history; in the 14th century, resident monks brewed mead and fishermen drank at the Pilchard Inn, still a fine place for tall tales and ghost stories.

Beaches With 25 beaches to choose from in the South Hams, you could visit a different beach every day for over three weeks! Nearby Bigbury, Blackpool Sands and Challaborough are all ‘Blue Flag’ beaches. Bantham is a Marine Conservation Society recommended beach with rock pools and sand dunes to explore, as well as being a good place for surfing and windsurfing. Beautiful Bigbury-on-Sea and Thurlestone have wide expanses of flat golden sand, while Hallsands is a sheltered, shingle cove. Hope Cove, once frequented by smugglers, is a pretty fishing village with two sandy beaches and shipwrecks!

Totnes Quirky, cool and leading the way on sustainability, the little market town of Totnes is well worth an afternoon of rambling cobbled streets. Stop in independent cafes, visit the ancient castle or embark on a food foraging course at the Dartington Estate. To sample the best wine coming out of Devon, take a stroll along the River Dart to Sharpham Wine and Cheese, where tastings happen daily in the most beautiful of rural settings.

Nearest Beaches Slapton Sands, which is mostly shingle, is just three-miles from Maberly. For sandier beaches and world-class surf, head to Blackpool Sands, Mill Bay and Bantham, all between seven and ten miles away.

FOOD AND DRINK

Home-Cooked

There are certainly no lack of fabulous independent and artisan food delis and bakeries near Maberly. For fresh, to-die-for bread and pastries for breakfast, nip to @ The Bakery, just two-miles up the road. Thinking of barbecuing the night away? Fresh fish from Catch of the Day in Kingsbridge sells the finest local and sustainable seafood in the land, which is quite the accolade for south Devon.

In-House Cuisine

If you'd rather spend your luxury self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for your party (on prior request).

Eating Out

The Millbrook Inn is a wonderful gastro-pub just a mile and a half from Maberly in South Pool, where both foodies and craft beer enthusiasts will be in their element. For a more casual, but no less delicious dinner, there is nowhere more exceptional than the Oyster Shack at Bigbury. The menu is ever-changing but always with one constant: outstanding, fresh, perfectly cooked food.
