Self-catering English country home near Frome, Somerset

Introduction

Built in 1653 for a successful wool merchant and now benefitting from the loving hand of Simon Morray Jones’ team (who restored both Babington House and No1. Royal Crescent), the Wool Merchant's House flaunts many of its original features. Thick, exposed beams reign in the upper bedrooms, while window seats and stone fireplaces throughout guarantee plenty of cosy reading nooks. Luxurious in its entirety, spend long mornings lounging in one of the three freestanding bath tubs overlooking the gardens before arming oneself with canvas tote bags and exploring the flea markets, boutiques and cobbles of nearby Frome.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Elegant and understated, each of the Wool Merchant's House's five bedrooms enjoy calming natural tones and organic materials. On the first floor is the master suite, with super king-size bed, separate dressing area and study and an en suite bathroom with standalone bath tub and walk-in shower. There are two further super king-size bedrooms on the first floor, both sharing the family bathroom with bath and separate rainfall shower. Upstairs in the eaves of the house are two further bedrooms, one double and one twin sharing the second floor family bathroom with claw foot bath tub and separate rainfall shower. There are a further two separate WCs in the house; on the ground floor and off the back stairs.

Outside

Set within large, fully-enclosed grounds, the Wool Merchant's House has a secret garden worthy of any game of hide and seek. Children will love to sneak off to one of two Wendy Houses while grown ups spread out on blankets in the old orchard or light the barbecue to celebrate long summer evenings while indulging in good food and better conversation under balmy skies. With formal lawns and seating areas, along with a small courtyard there are certainly no lack of places to get away from it all. Feeling the heat? The outdoor swimming pool (with a coded gate to ensure little explorers are safe) is the perfect place to kick back, feet dangling in the water, ice-cold gin and tonic in hand.

For Relaxation

The Wool Merchant's House was designed with relaxation and good times in mind; lounge in the summer warmth by the outdoor pool, sink into squishy sofas next to a crackling woodburner with a glass of wine and gather together in the open-plan kitchen-diner for long nights of home cooked food and deep, roaring laughter. On bright days, let children roam free in the gardens under the watchful eye of the terrace gargoyle; in winter, commence a family-wide game of sardines throughout the labyrinth of decadent rooms.

Practicalities

There is parking for four cars, plus free on-road parking if needed. The kitchen has a large electric Everhot range cooker (only on in winter), an electric fan oven, steam oven, five-ring gas hob, dishwasher and Quooker hot tap. In the dining area a wine fridge, microwave, freezer and small dishwasher can be found behind the panelled cupboards. There are two washing machines, two driers and an extra freezer in the utility room. As the property is Grade II listed, the original sash windows do allow some noise to filter through from the front of the house.

We have remained sympathetic to the Wool Merchantīs Houseīs history and preserved and renovated original features, such as 17th century fireplaces and stained glass windows, throughout. Like an onion, historic layers of the house are revealed as one walks from room to room!

Go UFO hunting Just ten-minutes’ drive towards Warminster from the house is National Trust’s Cley Hill. A steep but rather tremendous walk, past stunning wildlife and archaeological sites, leads to a vantage point with views out across Wiltshire and Somerset. The hill is well-known in the area as a UFO hotspot, and is the best place to view the famous crop circle in the fields below.

Go to market The Frome Independent, which takes place on the first Sunday of every month from March through to December, is arguably the town’s best day out. Artists and makers, seamstresses and vintage collectors move outside and onto the streets, taking over the town.

Explore Somerset Wool Merchant's House is perfectly placed for wandering the cobbles and chocolate-box villages of rural Somerset. UNESCO World Heritage City, Bath, with its Roman Baths, ancient Abbey and gorgeous architecture is just ten miles from the property, while Bruton and Bradford on Avon are also within easy reach.

Talk with the animals If you’re travelling with children in tow, there is no finer place in the country than Longleat Safari Park. Just 15 minutes from Frome and the Wool Merchant's House by car, take a drive on the wild side through the safari drive through (just remember to close the windows and hide the sandwiches!)

FOOD AND DRINK

Home-Cooked

They say fresh food is the best food, and it doesn’t get fresher than White Row Farm, less than a mile down the road from the Wool Merchant's House. Stock up on meat reared in the farm’s fields and home grown vegetables and salad from the kitchen garden; all the ingredients for a unique Somerset stay.

In-House Cuisine

If you'd rather spend your luxury self-catering break indulging in the little luxuries, let an in-house chef prepare a mouth-watering meal for you and your party (on prior request and subject to an additional cost).
