Country home elegance exudes from this alluring big country house in Cucklington, Somerset. Gatsby is a Grade-I listed Georgian house boasting 70 glorious acres of gardens, paddocks and ancient parkland overlooking the breath-taking Blackmore Vale. Play croquet on the lawn, unfurl within the lavish interiors and swim in the starlit outdoor heated pool to create the grandest of gatherings imaginable.
When the owners first set eyes on this big country house hidden at the bottom of sloping flower-filled meadows in Cluckington, although crumbling from within, they met an irresistible challenge. Beneath Gatsby’s perfect façade of buttercream-coloured Cary stone lay original working shutters, grand fireplaces, fine cornicing and oak floorboards. Years later, following a sensitive renovation integrating a swimming pool, cinema, tennis court, gym and helipad alongside an exquisite interior overhaul, the owners have opened their medieval home to offer luxury self-catering accommodation for up to 24 lucky guests in a truly exclusive and magical mansion.
Bedrooms and Bathrooms
The grand staircase leads to eight bountiful bedrooms: the king-sized master which flaunts a show-stopping en suite bathroom with roll top bath, WC and mosaic alcove shower; four further king-size bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, WCs and separate showers; two king-size bedrooms with en suite shower rooms; plus a double attic room with en suite shower room. Opposite the main house in the old cowshed, along with its big open plan kitchen-dining-sitting room, are an additional four king-size bedrooms (all ground floor); one has an en suite shower room whilst the remaining three each have en suite bathrooms with showers.
Gatsby is surrounded by 70 acres of enchanting grounds complete with sweeping lawns, formal gardens, ancient parkland and a lake. Swan around your private country estate in true Downton Abbey style and absorb the sweet essence of old-fashioned English romance from every rose and herbaceous border. The outdoor swimming pool is heated, making summer splashes and evening dips under the cool shimmer of the moonlight both as tempting. The south-facing terrace overlooks the croquet lawn and is a divine spot for homemade lemonade and cucumber sandwiches after a lively game of tennis. As evening falls, slip into one of the roll top baths and watch the sky turn flamingo pink over the gardens - there'll be nothing more awe-inspiring.
With everything you could possibly wish for on site, you'll simply never want to leave. On rainy days, head over to the old stable block where the games room, gym and sauna will be sure to titillate competitive souls within the party. There's also a sound-proof cinema room hidden down a secret staircase and no less than six exquisitely-designed sitting rooms which will ensure the fun continues well into the wee hours. Shake up a post-dinner party cocktail in the twenties-style bar and romance your partner with a waltz beside one of the roaring open fires.
There is gated parking for several cars. The main house boasts a large kitchen which flaunts all the mod cons including an Aga, electric oven, dishwasher, fridge, freezer, plus a washing machine and tumble dryer in the utility. The cowshed has a separate open plan kitchen-dining room with electric oven, hob and large fridge-freezer. Two housekeepers live in a separate cottage within the courtyard should you need them.
