Our time spent here in your happy house has been very special for all of us, and we feel so blessed to have experienced it. We have done so much in such a short period of time, and we leave feeling very refreshed. It´s been so special, thank you so much.
What a lovely place, the views are incredible! We had one lovely day before storm Ciara hit and we were trapped inside watching it… there are much worse places to be! I can imagine this is also amazing in the summer. Thank you. The property is well cared for and this makes all the difference. Smashing!
My friend and I have had the most marvellous week at this absolutely stunning cottage by the sea! We´ve had gorgeous sunshine most days and took great advantage of the calm, peaceful and warm pool. The cottage itself couldn´t have been more cosy and welcoming, in the evenings we snuggled up on the sofa. The beds are so very comfortable and we slept so well. The last thing to mention is all the delicious restaurants in the area! Thank you so much for a memorable stay. We would love to visit again.
We have had a brilliant week at Sugar Ray. All members of the family loved it! The weather has been brilliant and the pool is lovely and thoroughly enjoyed by all. The house is so cosy and it felt like a home from home. I highly recommend this great property.
A charming eclectic house in a stunning location. We had a lovely time and the weather was fabulous. It would be nice to spend time here in the summer when the pool is open. A special shout out to Claire who went all out to make sure our welcome was great. We had a lovely weekend.
We had the most wonderful stay and the weather cooperated beautifully! Please would you tell the owners that they have done an absolutely magnificent job with the property. We have been staying in holiday houses for over 25 years and this one was incredibly well thought through and perfectly kitted out. We loved it all!
Just a quick note to say how wonderful everything has been. We´ve been renting holiday houses for over 20 years and this is the most well thought out one I´ve ever come across - beautifully done inside and out and stocked perfectly. Thank you to you and your team for making our stay so magical.
After a long journey, we were thrilled that the house looked so fabulous on arrival. After stocking up with goodies from the local shop, we headed straight to the beach with the dog. We have enjoyed lazy days by the pool and have loved the house. It has everything we could need. Thank you.

Introduction
Made entirely from wood and designed with the sea views in mind, this cool, clapboard beach house is the perfect year-round sanctuary. Sat in the footprint of the grassroots self-sufficiency movement, Sugar Ray was rebuilt by a local craftsman in 2012, taking inspiration from hideaway cabins in the Scottish Highlands. A simple, eclectic interior encourages a journey through floor-to-ceiling windows to views of Hive Beach beyond. There's a Mediterranean vibe to the stone pool house, complete with handcrafted kitchen, snug and large outdoor dining area.
Inside
From the sumptuous embrace of the lounge to the charming shepherd’s hut with its own woodburner, chilled out mornings and rainy days here are a delight. Cosy down with a good book and be captivated by the mercurial seascapes outside. When bedtime calls, Sugar Ray has three double bedrooms in the main house, and one in the pool house. The shepherd's hut is an idyllic space for afternoon siestas overlooking the sea. Each bedroom is as luxurious as the next; light-filled, rich in personality and punctuated with characterful furnishings.
Outside
Overlooking the world-famous Chesil Beach on the east side of Burton Bradstock, the extensive, informally landscaped gardens were designed for family fun and sun worshipping. With a south-facing sunny disposition, follow the morning rays as they rise and fall around the house from swimming pool, to orchard, to colourful flower-bed bordered lawn. For daytime excursions with expeditionary appeal, the beach is a twenty-minute hike through fields and along Dorset's iconic cliff path. Later in the evening, gather around the fire pit in blankets and watch the coastline twinkle into the night.
There are four double bedrooms at Sugar ray, three bedrooms in the main house and one in the pool house. In the main house, there is a family bathroom with roll-top bath, separate shower and two WCs. There is an additional wet room in the pool house.

“The best feature of our property is the sea! Whatever the weather, if you´re out on the deck or cosy in the large sitting room you can see it and hear its soft roar from the beach below. It´s hypnotic and relaxing. You could be anywhere in the world.”
We've owned this special home for nearly 10 years and have spent nearly as long thoughtfully rebuilding the bungalow, decorating it and maintaining the large gardens. From the start, we have always been mindful that the real heroes of the piece are the wide expanse of sea and the beautiful and ancient landscapes that surround us.
As soon as you arrive, you'll be absolutely transfixed by the view and the presence of the sea. One of my very favourite things about Sugar Ray is stepping out of the car, day or night, to be greeted by the gentle roar of the waves, way below on the shingle beach. It is immediately relaxing and you will spend many a happy minute, or hour, listening to its gentle rhythm, whatever the weather.
Families and groups of friends of all ages will enjoy this coastal home and area alike. Should you wish to venture out, there are almost too many diversions. These range from antiquing to fossil hunting to angling. But you may well not want to leave or need to - Bridport Waitrose will deliver groceries to help make self-catering a breeze. Many a happy day can be spent lazing around the pool, reading in a quiet corner or cosying up on the sofas.

To Eat
HIX Oyster & Fish House, Lyme Regis
A cool and contemporary seafood restaurant run by the renowned chef, Mark Hix. They have wonderful views across Lyme Bay to St Brides and serve delicious food. You can also fit in a round of crazy golf or table tennis once you´ve eaten!
To Do
Chesil Beach
An 18-mile stretch of shingle beach, Chesil Beach famously forms part of the UNESCO protected Jurassic Coast. There are better spots for swimming but Chesil is great for walking (east or west) and fascinating for those with a particular interest in geology.
To Do
Abbotsbury Swannery
See the swans at Abbotsbury, the only managed colony of nesting mute swans in the world. Found near Abbotsbury village, the site sprawls over one-hectare around the Fleet Lagoon and can be home to over 600 swans at a time.
To See
Bridport
Bridport is famous for its markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays, as well as its array of independent shops. Visit the Vintage Quarter for antique and collectable hunting and head to Bridport Museum to learn about the ‘Bridport Dagger’.
Whether you're curious about pet policies, the nearest walkable pubs, or wild swimming spots, we have the answers to common property-specific queries here. For everything else, visit our Frequently Asked Questions page.
How far is the walk to the beach?
Hive beach can be reached on foot in approximately 40 minutes, through the fields. It is not suitable for those with limited mobility as the walk involves hills and stiles.
Can the pool house bedroom be used in winter?
The pool house can get chilly in winter months, therefore the bedroom cannot be used during this time.
