Along a wild stretch of the Uiginish peninsula on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, Northlight is a 19th century homestead transformed into a sanctuary with rigorous eco credentials. Inside, organic textures and tones thread through open-plan living spaces adorned with artwork from global wildlife expeditions, whilst picture windows frame an ever-shifting portrait of Loch Dunvegan and the Black Cuillin. Wander beyond the garden gate to the water's edge or seek restoration in the outdoor sauna as the tides turn below.
Introduction
This wild shoreline has exerted a mythic pull on travellers for generations. Local lore tells of a night-time crossing of the soft tidal sands – the parish minister and his horse became stranded whilst attempting to visit a milkmaid across the bay, before being rescued by Northlight's then occupier. Its current owners, both celebrated wildlife photographers and Fellows of the Royal Geographical Society, found themselves drawn here too, the Isle of Skye's elemental beauty echoing landscapes they'd encountered in some of the world's most remote latitudes. Watch mist unspooling from the Cuillin, wildlife darting in the tides, and dusk settling over MacLeod's Tables.
Inside
Within, Northlight is an oasis of calm. Picture windows and tactile interiors frame and mirror the raw topography of the landscape it inhabits. Rich tones and textures of stone, gorse and rust weave through open-plan living spaces adorned with artwork from the owners' global expeditions. Amongst them, a Tibetan thangka from the Indian Himalaya. Polished plaster walls gather the shifting Hebridean light, their soft luminosity echoing the silvery sheen that skims the surface of Loch Dunvegan. A pared-back kitchen with marbled work surfaces invites suppers of island produce, whilst a cocooning snug beckons for weather-watching, dram of Talisker in hand.
Outside
A stone seat, hand-built by local artisans, faces west towards the flat-topped silhouettes of MacLeod's Tables, where legend has it a clan chief once laid a feast beneath a ceiling of stars. To the south, the Black Cuillin rise dramatically, an ancient presence on the horizon. Between house and shore, a private outdoor sauna offers a place to pause. The owners have been known to spot otters at play and seals riding the current in the loch, with even the occasional minke whale passing through. A private path leads to the loch's edge, where crystalline waters invite a bracing swim before a picnic of Skye crab sandwiches. Explore the peninsula by foot or boat, then return via Dunvegan for a seasonal supper.

Getting there
- On the Map Loch Dunvegan is a sea loch on the west coast of the island of Skye in the Scottish Highlands.
- By Air Inverness City is a 2.5 hour drive and has daily flights from Luton, Gatwick and Manchester. Car hire is available at the airport.
- By Boat Guests can take the ferry from Glen Elg to Kylerhea, or Mallaig to Armadale with approximately a 20 minute crossing time and beautiful scenery.
- By Car Cross the Skye Bridge and follow the A87 to Sligachan. When entering the village of Dunvegan from the main Sligachan to Dunvegan road heading North, take the B884.
- By Train Travel by train to Inverness, a sleeper service operates from London Euston.

At the edge of Loch Dunvegan, Northlight faces a wide, open stretch of water. Beyond, the Cuillin Mountains rise in layers, whilst the distinctive flat tops of MacLeod´s Tables sit to the West. The house began as a farmhouse; its renovation retained the original footprint whilst adapting it for contemporary living, with air-source heating, triple glazing and underfloor heating.
The loch itself is active but never busy. Seals are a regular presence, and otters occasionally move along the shoreline in front of the garden, often unnoticed unless you are looking for them. Across the water, Dunvegan remains the local centre, with its harbour and long-established links to Dunvegan Castle. Further out, Coral Beach and Neist Point mark the transition from sheltered loch to open Atlantic.
