Viola | Luxury Self-Catering Home with Pool | Butleigh, Glastonbury

Viola

Butleigh, Glastonbury, Somerset, UK

Between the rolling hills of bucolic Somerset near Glastonbury lies a luxury home of two wildly different personalities. A Jekyll and Hyde of elegance and chinking chandeliers on one side, and a dark, heart-racing cave where escapism is the name of the game on the other, Viola is a self-catering escape to satisfy all. With a heated swimming pool, Formula 1 racing simulators, tennis court and hot tub; this home is hedonism embodied.

Introduction

After years of sailing the seven seas on a catamaran with the family in tow, Viola was the only welcome back to dry land that could possibly satisfy that roaming itch for the now-owners. Settled within 11 acres of pastoral paradise in the quiet Somerset village of Butleigh near Glastonbury, life at this self-catering home was built to be shared. While the self-proclaimed “man cave” offers opportunity en masse for thrilling flight and racing simulations, it’s time peacefully spent in the gardens which one remembers forever.

Inside

Cream and brandy hues create a natural and calming ambience, while wood beams and chandeliers give this luxe country home a French feel. Viola will entertain all, and while both big and little children in the group will race to get to the F1 and aeroplane simulators first, others can quietly while away the day with a good book or film in the arms of a soft leather sofa. For those who feel most at home in the kitchen, the garden has herbs and vegetables aplenty to cook the party a storm, while six gorgeous bedrooms offer the sweetest slumber imaginable.

Outside

A sunrise dip in the outdoor swimming pool, a glass of red wine as the moon climbs out of the Mendip Hills and a quiet supper for two in the lake house, coy carp gently swishing beneath the surface; there isn’t a single spot within Viola’s grounds which isn’t surrounded in bliss. Wander the three-hole golf course or row across the lake on lazy afternoons and when the light fades, grab the laser guns and tear around the fields before sinking into the Jacuzzi - winner gets the first flute of Champagne.

From the owner

“There are so many wonderful things about Viola, but our favourite has to be enjoying that first morning cup of coffee on the grass around the lake house, wrapped in blankets and feet swinging over the side, as the world brightens and ducks float between the lilies, chattering as they go.”

From the owner

My wife and I had always shared an ambition to buy a boat, take the kids out of school and sail off in search of new experiences, and in 2013 we hired a manager for our US based retail business, purchased a sailing catamaran and, together with our three children and black lab Buster, checked out of conventional society and set sail.

For me it was truly the most unforgettable of experiences. There was no schedule and life just moved from moment to moment. Sometimes the twins would wake up and ask “what country is this again?” and that freedom was what I felt life was all about. Alas, all good things have to come to an end and after 25 years of absence, it was time to return to England.

We settled on Butleigh because it’s just, well, fantastic! There is an extraordinary sense of community, most of which revolves around one of the best pubs in the South West, “The Rose and Port Cullis”. Then of course there’s Viola which, aside from being close to the pub, checks many other boxes, including its peacefulness, 11-acre grounds and views.

Over the years we have made several modifications and improvements, but my favourite feature here, of course, are the racing simulators.
