Introduction

This Victorian manor sits at the heart of North Cornwall’s National Landscape, surrounded by three acres of private gardens and wildflower meadows, with sweeping 180-degree views stretching towards the sea. One of Cornwall’s most picturesque coves lies just over a mile away, reached by a quiet country lane, and Port Isaac is around a 20-minute walk. Once a successful hotel, the manor has recently been refurbished. Its tall ceilings, bay windows and grand proportions have been retained, whilst the interiors have been reimagined in a contemporary transitional style. Gather around the fire on cooler days and watch the weather roll across the landscape, or drift in the pool on summer afternoons, surrounded by olive trees, lavender and swaying grasses.

Inside

Salterton has all the hallmarks of traditional Victorian elegance: bay windows, ornamental coving and layers of tactile fabric. Yet there is an eclecticism at play, too; gilded frames hang above the mantelpiece alongside contemporary works from the owners’ personal collection, whilst a rich colour palette draws on the Romantic era with a distinctly 21st century feel. Within these well proportioned rooms, historic character is punctuated by modern design and innovation: a movie projector, a bathroom suite that wouldn’t look misplaced on the Upper East Side, and a Bauhaus-inspired kitchen of clean lines and hulking ingots of wood. It is, in essence, a holistic overhaul – a glimpse into the past, reimagined as a modern seaside retreat.

Outside

It’s a life of picnicking and beachcombing, of sailing and naturalist pursuits. Near the fishing village of Port Isaac, Salterton sits within one of Cornwall’s most sought-after stretches of coastline, where hidden swimming coves and powder-soft beaches await. This cinematic stretch of the north coast featured in The Salt Path and also provided the backdrop for the fictional town of Portwenn in Doc Martin. Around the working harbour, an enlivening creative scene unfolds; it’s not uncommon to hear the folk shanties of Fisherman’s Friends or stumble upon artists at work. The area is renowned for sublime surf breaks and Michelin-starred restaurants, with some of the finest seafood in the country within touching distance.

• PracticalitiesThere is off-road parking for seven cars. The kitchen has an oven, induction hob, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, wine fridge, and freezer. The utility room contains a washing machine and tumble dryer. There is underfloor heating throughout. Please note that the pool is not enclosed, so do exercise due diligence if you are travelling with children or dogs. There are CCTV cameras at the entrance points to the property for security purposes. There is a sheltered pool area with a pool house, and an out-building containing the gym, office, and games room. The house manager resides in a separate property within the grounds; while they have use of the private driveway, they will be discreet and not disturb your stay

Port Isaac
