Indulgent living comes naturally at Orbis, where luxurious furnishings and thick textiles swathe calming interiors in this most tranquil and private of settings. Escape from it all and read in the stone temple by the stream, warm up from a day’s exploration in the sauna and spend nights curled up together watching films on giant projectors. Flower boxes line interior windowsills, glass stretches from floor to sky and touches of rusticity mix with modern style. As far as self-catering houses go, this Dorset countryside getaway is second to none.

Inside

A real family home, there is something for everyone at Orbis. While teenagers will take delight in a games room specifically tailored for their entertainment and fun, the grown-ups can kick back with a cup of tea in hand, French doors flung open to enjoy the vast countryside views. Come evening, dine in the oak-framed orangery and enjoy mood lighting as stars twinkle through the ceiling. To continue the conversation before bed, the sumptuous lounge is made even more cosy with the addition of a roaring woodburner.

Outside

Orbis' sweeping topiary-peppered lawns and mature borders offer peaceful seclusion, while the surrounding views of rolling hills and farmland ensure there is always something to tease the eye. A delightful feature, a small mill stream with a footbridge meanders along the banks, adjacent to which is a pillared grotto with a timber walkway. Perfect for daytime relaxation and social evenings together, the deck with outdoor sofas allows you to sit and take in the heady scent of lavender as wine and conversation flow in equal measure.

The final first floor bedroom is a triple bunk bedroom, accessed through the family suite, and is perfect for children. Also in the main house is a first floor family bathroom. There are two bedrooms in the adjoining Papilio Creek, a ground floor double bedroom with super king-size bed and a first floor zip-and-link bedroom (which can be made up as a super king-size double or a twin). Papilio Creek also features a first floor family bathroom with separate walk-in shower.

  • On the Map Orbis is located in the little hamlet of Milborne Wick, Dorset.
  • By Car Approximately two and a half hours or 125 miles from London, just off the A303.
  • By Train Direct trains from London Paddington to Castle Cary, or from London Waterloo to Sherborne. The nearest station is Templecombe.
  • By Air Bristol international airport is a 50 minute drive away; Exeter 1 hour; London Heathrow 1 hour 45 minutes; Gatwick in two hours.

Located in a small hamlet of period properties, Orbis was originally two farm cottages that housed the workers for the village mill, which we have lovingly restored and extended to form a surprisingly spacious family home. Set into the hill, the property looks across to the old hill fort, which is frequented daily by sheep - apart from the one day a year when it's the setting for the annual village cricket match!

The property is built from Sherborne stone with leaded oak-mullioned windows and an impressive oak-framed orangery that has been added in recent years. Being set into the hill, the house has numerous levels with the garden guest bedroom opening straight out onto the terraced lawn via French doors.

You’ll find a choice of outside dining spots – why not indulge in an early morning coffee in the herb garden surrounded by lavender, up above the orchard where you can look down over the hamlet or under the shade of the apple tree outside the kitchen?

In the summer, relax on the rooftop – it's a real suntrap! Or perhaps take a good book up to the hidden gazebo and read by candlelight. Orbis is a great place to explore the delights of the Dorset countryside.
