Little Bear | Luxury Self-Catering | Billingshurst, West Sussex

Little Bear

Billingshurst, West Sussex, UK

Acres upon acres of bluebell-swathed woodland provide the sylvan backdrop for this unique hideaway in the heart of the West Sussex Weald Downlands. Forget Goldilocks and her three Ursidae visitors; this dreamy cabin in the woods complete with eco hot tub is a grown-up celebration of epicurean delights which have been thoughtfully-crafted with nature lovers and sustainable yet luxury self-catering in mind.

The architect-designed Little Bear cabin near Billingshurst is shrouded from the outside world by the kaleidoscope of wildflowers which fill the meadow. You won’t find distractions like television or Wi-Fi here, allowing those in pursuit of a digital detox a luxurious self-catering haven in which to re-awaken their connection to nature. Don boots and explore the ancient woodland all around, ending up at the nearby inn for a home-cooked meal. Later, upon return, wrap up in fluffy towels and tiptoe out to the eco hot tub to enjoy a soak under the stars…

Each area of this luxury woodland retreat feels separate even though the cleverly-designed open-plan living area organically flows from one end of the cabin to the other. Glorious summer or brooding winter, early morning or lazy evening, bask in its rough-luxe embrace and revel in the peaceful tranquillity from your favourite pew. When the day begins to fade and night closes over the pastoral views, the lofty king-size bed beckons. Bedecked with fine linens and soft faux furs, the bed is exactly as the fable describes: not too hard and not too soft - just right.

The wildflower meadow at Little Bear is very special indeed. The waltzing boughs, sighing winds and feathered musical choristers which form the magical woodland amphitheatre on your doorstep provide a natural operatic backdrop to blaze the senses. Let the lilting melodies lull you into a blissful reverie as you slip into the wood-fired hot tub, an expertly-mixed martini in hand. Once you are ready to hop out, towel off and rotate to sit fireside; bathing in the amber warmth underneath the moon's glow is totally enchanting.

From the owner

“Whenever we stay at Little Bear, it´s the magical woodland that inspires us the most and beckons us for walks and adventure. A particularly special spot, the hornbeam circle is perfect for sitting a while and taking in the leafy sights and scents of the woods.”

From the owner

Little Bear was built about 12 years ago from green oak and erected by local craftsmen. The architect, Roderick Janes, had originally used the cabin as a display building at the Islington Business Centre in London, but these ancient woods are Little Bear's natural home.

Since then the cabin has been used as a welcome woodland retreat from the hurly-burly of daily life. The surrounding woods are there for your enjoyment; you can explore them at your leisure and, if you let me know, can also get involved in woodland bushcraft skills too!

You may encounter Sidney the Carpathian sheepdog, Didge and Duster the terriers, and Gracie the whippet on your walks in the woods. We also have chickens in the orchard – one of whom is a cockerel who may well decide to sweetly serenade you in the morning!

Guest Testimonials

Wow! What a beautiful and unique lodge. Thank you for the hamper, it was much appreciated! We have enjoyed lovely walks, pubs, birdsong and peace. We would highly recommend Little Bear and the friendly local pubs!

Our first trip away together as a couple and we´ve had the most wonderful stay! It´s a truly magical place for blissful relaxation. We loved the fires, hot tub, and the bbq. Standing on the Temple of Tranquility in the woods was also a highlight. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful spot for us to relax and write in. We enjoyed many forest walks and summer nights at Little Bear. Thank you for the wine and other goodies in the hamper also. We return to the Caribbean full of forest spirit!

Thank you for an amazing stay, and for the lovely hamper. We particularly enjoyed the hot tub, which made the experience very special. We made use of the BBQ too which was lovely. I would definitely recommend to friends and I am very tempted to book a return stay! We loved the peace and quiet, and listening to the birds song. Thank you!

We had a lovely time at Little Bear. Very cosy and comfortable. The log burner was great but we didn´t try the hot tub. We didn´t mind the rain as it gave us an excuse to light the fire in June! We´d love to come back again soon, the next time we need a break from the real world. Thank you for the hamper and gorgeous flowers dotted around, these were much appreciated!

Wow. What can I say. Utterly gorgeous. I booked Little Bear to spend some time working on my business, away from the computer, my life, and the distractions... this place certainly delivered, providing just the creative space I needed. All the little touches, the flowers and the fires were extremely welcome. I will definitely be back.

Thank you for such an amazing place to relax after getting married on Sunday. After all the crazy wedding stuff it has been amazing to relax, the only worry being how long to stay in the hot tub. To stay here as new husbands and just unwind has been beautiful in the sunshine, and we cannot thank you enough. The hamper has gone down such a treat, as has the jar of shortbread! What a lovely touch! This has been the perfect start to married life.

Thank you for such a beautiful stay. We were married on Friday and this was the perfect few days retreat to unwind in preparation for our mini-moon. I even arrived in my wedding dress! Every little detail has been thought of - we wanted for nothing during our stay. The sun has gloriously shone for us and we have had the most blissful beginnings to married life together!

Thank you for such an amazing place to hide away for the weekend. This was our last trip before expecting the arrival of our second baby in 6 weeks and it couldn´t have been more relaxing! Everything we needed was catered for and more. Nothing beat looking out into the woods and seeing dear running past - so idyllic!

We cannot put into words how much of a wonderful time we had here. I thought I was coming away for my birthday and left engaged! This place will always hold fond memories for us. Everything about Little Bear is ideal. Relaxing in front of the wood burner whilst waiting for the hot tub to heat up was just perfect! The walks around Little Bear are gorgeous too! We cannot wait to return.

Thank you so much for such a lovely week at Little Bear. It was the perfect Minimoon location. We enjoyed the beautiful walks in the area, generally finishing at The Blue Ship. The small touches, like the hamper and the stocked fridge we much appreciated. Our break was wonderfully relaxing and we look forward to returning in the future. Happy New Year!

A lovely relaxing place to stay to celebrate our first wedding anniversary! We wanted something remote and luxurious to unwind from the stresses of London life but didn´t want to drive for miles. Little Bear gave us what we needed. We spent most of the time reading books by the fire. You don´t need to venture far from here to find a lovely pub for lunch. Would recommend Little Bear to those who want to escape and unwind!

What a special cabin in the woods, we leave with heavy hearts! We have had an amazing weekend here celebrating our tenth wedding anniversary, and it has been lovely reading all of the engagement stories in the testimonials book and reminiscing about our own. My husband´s second love is fire, so he was in his element running the hot tub and fire pit simultaneously. Thank you so much!

And relax! Is there anything more hypnotic than the shimmer of the trees across the meadow in the evening sun? A wholesome hideaway in this ancient woodland, the silence only disturbed by the patter of tiny feet. Enjoy!

We have had four amazing days here, with fantastic weather! Mainly spent in the garden, soaking up the sun, drinking wine and relaxing. Every little detail inside and out of Little Bear is simply fantastic! We cannot wait to recommend to friends and family and we can´t wait to come back again!

Little Bear is such a beautiful and relaxing place. We´ve spent a lovely weekend celebrating our first wedding anniversary, relaxing in the garden, walking in the woods, and enjoying a glass of wine in the evenings listening to the birds. Thank you!

We so needed this break after a horrible start to the year, and it was perfect! Quiet, no people, no TV, we´re not sure we want to go back to all the noise of everyday living. I think we have found a new bolt hole for when things get too much. Basically we just completely and utterly relaxed and did nothing for once.

Thank you Little Bear for our amazing honeymoon, what a relaxing start to our marriage! We loved the hot tub! We have seen so much wildlife here; deer, horses, bunnies and more! The local pubs were great too. We loved just chilling every night on the love seat by the fire with a glass of fizz and no TV or phone, just us!

What a magical weekend away for my 30th birthday. Horse riding, long walks, lazy mornings, and cheese and wine by the fire. Perfect! We couldn´t have asked for a better or more enchanting weekend, thank you Little Bear!

We have so enjoyed our week in the woods, here in Little Bear. What a perfect spot to relax away from the daily grind! We go home very happy, and engaged! Can´t wait to come back and see all the bluebells.

What a gorgeous hideaway from the hustle and bustle. Such a relaxing week away, we are now truly recharged. Loved our stay at Little Bear, the perfect tonic and just what we needed. Thank you!

We had such a relaxing stay! We decided to book somewhere relaxing for our honeymoon (and unexpected babymoon!), and Little Bear did not disappoint. The cabin has been enchanting and we will certainly be coming back in the future. Such a cosy and tranquil week, thank you.

What a wonderful week well spent in such beautiful surroundings! This was the perfect honeymoon and we could not have asked for a more restful or perfect hideaway! Thank you for providing such a lovely escape from reality!

After a hectic wedding week, Little Bear was an amazing place to wind down and enjoy some ´us´ time. What an incredible property cabin with the most beautiful surrounding. We will be sad to leave but will be going home relaxed and refreshed. Thanks for a wonderful honeymoon!

We have stayed here for a week for our honeymoon and babymoon. It was blissfully relaxing and peaceful. An added bonus was being able to bring along our two small dogs and they enjoyed sleeping on the grass in the sunshine. Perfect little get away!

Everything about Little Bear and its surroundings are stunning. We could not have asked for more for our first anniversary treat. A big bonus was seeing the woodland deer twice. We will head home relaxed and refreshed. A big thank you to Luu for looking after us.

After what can be only described as a magical weekend in the woods, in a part of the world that I hold extremely close to my heart, I return home as a wife-to-be, and a year older. Thank you Little Bear for being the perfect host.

As is rarely the case, Little Bear was even more magical than the pictures suggest. A perfect weekend in the perfect setting... we don´t want to leave! Thank you.

We had a great time at Little Bear. We did not see a sole the whole time we were there apart from two wild deer. Loved the location nestled in the middle of the woods, it was nice and relaxing away from it all.
