Solunar
Restronguet Point, Feock, Cornwall, UK
Stationed on a sliver of green amidst an ocean blue, this luxury waterfront home is enveloped by the elements in one of Cornwall’s most exclusive beauty spots. With the sea and sky so prominent, one could almost imagine being the captain of a pirate ship, smuggling rum by night into one of Feock’s hushed tidal creeks. Its suntrap terrace rolls into subtropical gardens before meeting the waterways of the Carrick Roads below, offering views to Mylor between the passing yachts.
Introduction
Mid-century at its core, but reimagined through a tapestry of generations, Solunar was conceived by architect John Crowther in the 60’s, when all was mottled render, and cool, steel lines. Now, clad in larch and wrapped with windows, (with its own landing stage and slipway), here is a luxury home on Cornwall’s south coast where summer holidays are embodied. Cold water dips before breakfast set the tone for days of adventure, while kayaking to Mylor for the freshest of oysters is a must do during balmy day stays. Still, there is comfort even in the cyclonic days; where weather watching over pots of tea and boardgames ensures together time well spent.
Inside
Echoic of the Carrick Roads sunlit blues, and with cool whites mimicking travelling nimbus', it's all about full-immersion at Solunar. A docked galleon settled in for the long haul, and yet, it would seem it likes to keep a check on from whence it came, with windows turned in each and every direction, following the sky's tempers and joyous swings, documenting its old-as-time love affair with the sea. Idling is of the essence here, with plenty of nooks (and beds) dedicated to watching the ebb and flow of kayaks and fishing boats; even from the cinema snug and games room, can one stay attuned with both tides, and celestial movements.
Outside
A meandering, sub-tropical garden rolls from the house, giving way to rockpools, then the Fal Estuary beyond. Oodles of pathways and lawns and a warm, broad sun terrace perched above the water bestow permission to enjoy the art of leisure. This unspoilt stretch of Cornwall is ripe for exploration; you'll discover private beaches hiding behind tangled rhododendron, and boutique seafood bars tucked into harbour corners. Down river, explore the vibrant town of Falmouth with its waterside patisseries, independent bookshops and art galleries, or head up river to the cathedral city of Truro, where cobbled streets and Georgian architecture combine.

From the owner
“We are delighted that you have chosen to stay at Solunar, which has been our family home since 1999. We have many cherished memories here, and hope very much that you get to enjoy some magical moments here of your own.”
Solunar was originally conceived in the 1960s by notable Truro based architect, John Crowther, who designed this and the neighbouring property to respond to the incredible natural setting, highlighting key views and integrating the building mass into the landform. The split-level steel and concrete house incorporated state of the art construction processes at the time, creating dramatic horizontal and vertical open spaces.
Recognising that the house was starting to show its age, we embarked on a full renovation project which took up much of 2023, and at all times we tried to do justice to its original mid-century design, while bringing it into the modern day.
Solunar is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty, perfectly spliced between two rivers and close to Falmouth, Truro, and St Mawes. We hope you enjoy the myriad life of the estuary and garden; my father's favourite way to spend time here was watching the world go by from one of the many windows.
