Sea Sentry | Luxury Self-Catering Coastal Home | Shaldon, Devon

Sea Sentry

Shaldon, Devon, UK

Immerse yourself in the romance and history of the Second World War at this one-of-a-kind waterside dwelling in Shaldon, recently featured on George Clarke's Amazing Spaces. Ingeniously re-designed by a local family, Sea Sentry nestles on the South Devon coast and has been brought bang into the 21st century with an armoury of mod cons, making it one of the most unique homestays the UK has on offer.

Introduction

Built during World War II, to house soldiers guarding the Shaldon coastal defences, Sea Sentry laid untouched for decades with only the company of nesting seabirds and oscillating tides. Enjoying a stint as an artists’ studio before being transformed into the unique house it is today, it now offers an unparalleled hideaway for romantic sojourns and solo breaks. Bask in the glorious views year-round and enjoy easy access to the heart of the village; a craft bakery, local butchers and ice cream parlour are all just a short distance away, making it an all the more inviting self-catering escape.

Inside

With an outward appearance not far off a sugar cube, this two-storey home exemplifies “tiny house design” at its best. But don’t be fooled; inside the bijou bolthole has everything you could need and more for a luxury holiday, complete with open-plan living area and huge sliding windows. For a refresh after a morning run along the coastpath, the über-modern shower room with its sensory mirror, underfloor heating and rainfall shower is a welcome haven. Come nightfall, orientate tired bodies towards the bedroom and let the sumptuous depths of the king-size bed lull you to sleep.

Outside

The South Devon village of Shaldon is a prime period destination; a pic’n’mix of meandering streets, thatched cottages and botanical gardens. There is a little zoo, bowling green and two unspoilt beaches; Shaldon (50 metres away) and the Ness, accessed via an old smuggler's tunnel. Watch village life go by from the vantage point of your private terrace with a spread of Devon splits, finger sandwiches and fizz. In August, see residents gather on the pocket-sized beach for the annual water carnival. A 200-year-old tradition, it is (according to local word) the oldest running regatta in the world!

From the owner

It’s tiny, so is it too small? was the foremost question when we found Sea Sentry. Absolutely not. There were plenty of doubters, but with the imagination, skill and dedication of our son Pete (who undertook all the work), we´re so pleased with our unique little bolthole.”

From the owner

Sea Sentry was built during the war to house two soldiers who guarded the road to the cliffs and coastal defences. It was solidly constructed to resist bomb blasts - the wall cavity was filled with sand (which we painstakingly had to remove by drilling 4" holes in the inner wall) – and to take the weight of a search light on its roof.

We originally acquired the property in 2014, but work didn’t actually start until 2015. It then took us over a year to complete the total redesign, restoration and renovation both inside and out. During the restoration, we tried to stay true to the utility feel of the building but at the same time fully equip it.

We incorporated lots of luxuries and home comforts. There is a “home automation” system which controls the lighting, underfloor heating and the TV (which is hidden away so as not to interfere with the views), a built-in Neff coffee machine and even a mini dishwasher!

Shaldon is a lovely village with everything on hand (butcher, bakery, pharmacy, newsagent, even a fish & chip shop) and eateries (pubs and restaurants). If you can’t find what you need there, then a short ferry trip across the water takes you to Teignmouth where there are other shops.

Guest Testimonials

When we arrived we didn´t know where to look first! Your eye is immediately caught by the view but the clever and beautiful design of the interior is almost as arresting! So much has been so thoughtfully packed into the space that we were left feeling that we were living in total luxury. Storm watching at night was spectacular, the best vantage point to watch the lightning across the sea. It has been the most relaxing holiday, listening to the sounds of the sea and watching the comings and goings of life passing the windows. Thank you for sharing your wonderful and perfect property, we will return.

We came here to celebrate our 35th anniversary and Sea Sentry is perfect in every way. It´s so easy to watch sea life without moving out of the house, and Shaldon is a picture-perfect seaside holiday. A quiet place to reflect on life and reaffirm one´s true love. Thank you for everything.

A beautiful property containing everything that we could have asked for. The location is stunning and had lots of things to see and do along with places to eat without having to drive anywhere at all. A truly stress free, luxury short break which completely recharged our batteries. Thank you Unique Homestays!

We have stayed in many Unique Homestays homes and this is our favourite! Such a lovely place to run away to for the weekend. We had a stormy Saturday and a sunny Sunday so saw all the weather changes from the window. A perfect romantic break for us. Thank you!

There are no words to describe how amazing this place is! So much so, we want one of our own! Shaldon is a lovely place with many friendly people and lots of yummy places to eat. We braved a coasteering experience which we truly recommend anyone to do! The firework display was epic (especially with the best seat in town)! We´ve had a divine mini-moon and we will be back again!

Waking up to that view each morning, as the sun catches the waves and kayakers take to the sea has been an utter joy. Having just got married, we were looking forward to some much needed r´n´r and we found Sea Sentry perfect. It is a wonderful place, great location and with everything that you could possibly need. We wish we could live here!

This has been the perfect place to spend our mini moon. Such calm and relaxation following the stress of the big day! We love the view and the sounds of the ocean, plus the daily joy of topless rowers! There are plenty of places to eat out and a lovely modern kitchen for a night in with fizz and baked camembert. This place is so special, we hope to return!

We have enjoyed an absolutely fabulous four nights holidaying at Sea Sentry. We have thoroughly loved the eclectic nature of the unique interiors, and quite frankly there are not enough superlatives in the English language to put the view into works. From watching the oyster catchers at dawn, to admiring the bobbing heads of seals, we have watched the view for hours. It is positively hypnotic. We will be recommending Sea Sentry for many years to come. Many thanks for such a memorable stay.

Wow this place is incredible! We booked ´Sea Sentry´ for our mini-moon looking for somewhere to hide away and relax, and this place has been just perfect. The house itself has been done beautifully, everything you need and more has been fitted yet it doesn´t feel at all crowded. Then of course there is the view; a constantly changing picture we never tired of. Just watching the world go by really has been magical, made perfect by Sea Sentry.

Thank you for a very relaxing, comfortable, and enjoyable stay. Sea Sentry is a beautifully presented and maintained property and Shaldon is a warm and friendly town. I leave totally relaxed and refreshed after four lazy days watching the sea, listening to the comings and goings of other people, and long walks along the coast. Bliss!

We were looking for a last minute holiday and went onto the Unique Homestays site. By chance Sea Sentry was available and we didn´t look any further as we were so taken with the pictures of the house and the views. We shall so miss the activity on the water, whenever you look out of the window there is something happening. Even with unseasonable weather the holiday has been wonderful. Thank you so much.

As many others have said, this view is both hypnotic and stunning. We have found both peace and relaxation here and are amazed at what can be achieved in so small a space. The potential to use the house as a centre for walking we had not at first fully appreciated, however we have hiked more here then on any previous holiday. We will return and share the ´secret´ of the house with friends and family.

We spent an incredible four days here, it is an amazing base to explore Devon from. You never tire of the view and there is everything you need right here. It is immaculate and beautifully executed, thanks for a fantastic stay.

We chose Sea Sentry for the fantastic views and for the chance to stay in a fantastic piece of history for our honeymoon, it hasn´t disappointed. We could never get bored of watching the water from the property. Shaldon is a great village to be a base, we enjoyed daily breakfast at the Clipper and drinks and dinner at the Ness. It was nice to see a seaside so busy and well maintained. We will definitely be returning.

What an amazing place to stay, the view has been incredible. Listening to the waves and watching the world go by has been very relaxing! The house has been perfect for our ´minimoon´ and we would absolutely recommend to others, what a fantastic place.

We´ve had an amazing time, always something to see out of the window and we loved the rowing every evening. We had fabulous lobster at the Crab Shack and a great evening meal at the London Inn. This is a beautiful place to stay; everything you may need is in this cosy space. We haven´t used the car since we arrived, just walked every day. That´s what we call a holiday! Thank you for the opportunity.

We had a fantastic week at Sea Sentry, safely back home now but missing the sounds and views of the sea already. You really have created something exceptional and special! We will be recommending you to others and hope you have a fantastic season across 2017! Thank you for providing us with such a lovely place to escape to.

As soon as Sea Sentry came onto your books we fell in love with it and knew we wanted to stay there. With a special ´big´ birthday looming it was a no brainer! It was perfect in so many ways but particularly because it was truly unique. We also loved the historical background of Sea Sentry.

We have to leave today, wish we had booked more days! Very much love everything about Sea Sentry especially the wonderful views day and night across to Teignmouth.

What a fab place! It is a super spot! If you only do one thing, eat at The Crab Shack. If you only do two things, eat at The Crab Shack twice!! Also make sure you never stop looking outside and have the window open - the sounds are perfect.

We had a lovely time at Sea Sentry. It is beautifully small and perfectly finished. You have done such a wonderful job converting it into a holiday home. We had lots of comments from passersby and it is great spot to sit and look at the view and people watch. Shaldon is also lovely and I´m sure we´ll be back.

We are blown away. Sea Sentry is a unique setting where you can stare out the window for hours, pop down to the beach to fish and simply walk a few hundred meters to have amazing food. The place is so complete and so comfortable, it´s incredible that it all fits into this space.Thank you for making our stay so great and for all the support you have provided us. We are looking forward to coming back one day!

The word ´unique´ is bandied around a little too much these days but that is what this place is. The view and the sunrises are exceptional, everyone who visits will want to return again.

What a wonderful and special property to stay in. From the second we arrived we were in love with the views, you can just sit watching the world go by and forget about everything. Everything is so well thought of it actually feels spacious. We´ve had the best anniversary. Thank you!

We have spent so much time just enjoying the views from this amazing little ´bolthole´ There is such a mix of activities both on the estuary and out to sea and yes the sunrise is definitely worth seeing. Thank you both, you must be congratulated and be very proud of what you have achieved here in this cosy pad at Shaldon. It has been such a lovely experience for us both and thanks again.
