Elphinstone | Luxury Self-Catering Coastal Home | Studland, Dorset

Elphinstone

Studland, Dorset, UK

Settled into a land which inspired the Famous Fiveís adventures, Elphinstone looks out across Studland Bay and the rolling hills of Dorset. Traditional Purbeck Stone blends into the coastal landscape while enormous windows allow sweeping views of the horizon. Simple yet stylish, with a nod to seventies style, this luxury self-catering family home is the perfect base for a summer holiday by the sea.

Introduction

Looking out across the curving lines of Studland Bay and with a salty breeze teasing your hair, itís easy to let any remnants of reality wash away at Elphinstone. The beating summer sun and the call of gulls swooping overhead call to mind a simpler time of running barefoot across the sand and the sweet taste of soft-whip ice creams. Inside, pure, neutral tones donít dare pull eyes from the changeable skies outside, yet assured comfort and confident class in the clever design of this luxury home ensure deep relaxation whatever the weather.

Inside

Bright, punctuated with accents of exposed wood and alive with thriving house plants, Elphinstone's cool interiors mirror the changing landscape outside with soft whites and soothing greys. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer sweeping views of the Dorset coastline, while sink-into chairs and luxury beds encourage time spent lingering over mugs of tea while the weather shifts outside. With a kitchen ideal for socialising and a dining area maximising the glorious south coast sunsets, self-catering was never so appealing.

Outside

It was Enid Blyton who once wrote, ďI donít know why, but the meals we eat on picnics always taste so much nicer than the ones we have indoors,Ē and what finer way to spend a day in southern England than sprawled under a faraway tree with not a care in the world? Armed with a hamper of pastries and sweet treats from Chococo's, along with a chilled bottle of fizz, stuff backpacks, gather blankets and wander the hills in search of a quiet place somewhere. From beach picnics to barbecues at home, Elphinstone is a haven for outside dining.

From the owner

“The views from Elphinstone are beautiful whatever the season, and can be captured from many rooms as well as from the side veranda and balconies. The expansive garden invites guests to wander round and enjoy the planting, kitchen garden and orchard; offering time and space to truly unwind.”

From the owner

We purchased Elphinstone in 2013, and although only 20 years old, it was in need of some modernisation and work to make it more open and to take advantage of the views. We subsequently took on some major landscaping to turn the front garden (once just a steep slope) into a place that had different areas that could be enjoyed and to create the kitchen garden and small orchard. We also did major work to create the barbecue area and large balcony which is very private and still allows for the lovely views of the bay.

Studland is a wonderful place - it is very 'local' and quite the opposite to its Sandbanks neighbour. The beaches are excellent, with summertime activities on Knoll Beach, Friday paella nights on South Beach and lots of rock pooling in between. The walk up the hill behind the house is a must; walk down to Old Harry and round to the village to enjoy a pint in the Bankes Arms. †

Since owning the house we have spent some wonderful time with family and friends here. There is something for everyone, young and old, and it truly is our home away from home.†
