Sea Sentry | Luxury Self-Catering Coastal Home | Shaldon, Devon

Immerse yourself in the romance and history of WW2 when staying at this luxury self-catering house on the water, recently featured on George Clarke's Amazing Spaces. Ingeniously re-designed, Sea Sentry nestles on the south Devon coast in sought-after Shaldon and has been brought bang into the 21st Century with an armoury of mod cons, making it one of the most unique homestays the UK has on offer.

Luxury self-catering for couples in Devon

Built during WW2 to house two soldiers who guarded the Shaldon coastal defences in south Devon, Sea Sentry laid untouched for decades with only the company of the nesting seabirds and oscillating tides. More recently the deserted wartime relic became a studio, attracting artists drawn in by its magnetising estuary views, and one day captured the imagination of a Devon family who transformed it into the unique house it is today. Possibly the most beautiful bombproof build in Britain, history buffs and lovers of the traditional English seaside holiday will explode with excitement on arrival at this one-of-a-kind home.

Bedrooms and Bathrooms

With an outward appearance not far off a sugar cube, this two-storey home exemplifies “tiny house design” at its best. The ground floor comprises a cabin style bedroom with king-size bed and an über-modern shower room which features a square basin, WC, sensory mirror, underfloor heating and luxury rainfall shower... big enough for two!

The south Devon village of Shaldon is a true period place; a pic’n’mix of meandering streets, thatched cottages and botanical gardens. There is a little zoo, bowling green and two unspoilt beaches; Shaldon (50m away) and The Ness accessed via an old smuggler's tunnel. Watch village life go by from the vantage point of your terrace with a spread of Devon splits and Champers. See fishermen haul in their nets and don’t miss the sporting events in August where residents gather on the pocket-sized beach for the annual water carnival - a 200 year old tradition and (according to local word) the oldest running regatta in the world.

For Relaxation

Here, living is easy. The seaside village has a butchers for local meat, a craft bakery for fresh bread, the Tom Thumb boutique for handmade bath products and a post office for sending letters home ‘with love from Shaldon’. There is even an ice cream parlour (complete with a fudge bar!) called The Lollie Bean – it doesn’t get much quainter than that. As evening falls, supper under the stars on the private terrace will make for a magical end to your picture-perfect day.

From October to May guests can park on the road just before the property, otherwise the owners provide a permit for The Ness Shaldon car park which is a five minute return walk away. The tiny kitchen is perfectly formed and includes a Neff combi fan oven/microwave, hob, fridge, dishwasher and coffee machine.

Our Take

Property Owner Andy says

"It’s tiny, so is it too small?” was the foremost question when we found Sea Sentry. Absolutely not. There were plenty of doubters, but with the imagination, skill and dedication of our son Pete (who undertook all the work) we´re so pleased with our unique little bolthole.
