Old Pine
Coverack, Cornwall, UK
Where Coverack's ancient contours trace the boundary between Earth's mantle and crust, Old Pine stands sentinel. Following a sensitive restoration, this luxury self-catering retreat honours its location through design – charred timber retains the patina of time, interiors refract coastal light, and terraced gardens cradle a hot tub and fire pit. Sweeping sea views flood the living spaces above, whilst below, a yoga room, cinema snug and cocktail room ground with an earthen warmth. Read more...
Introduction
Old Pine overlooks a rare geological site on Cornwall's Lizard Peninsula, where a ribbon of Earth's mantle is visible at low tide. At one with its coastal surroundings, each layer of this home's story surfaces by design: serpentine accents echo the unique local geology, rare plantings and prints evoke its botanical history, while granite arches and gentle curves that follow the bay’s line recall its 1927 origins. A place of both revelation and retreat, Old Pine's soul-stirring view opens up with each step inside, inviting all who enter into its organically restorative embrace.
Inside
This coastal sanctuary reveals itself in strata across three floors. By day, light pools in limewashed living spaces where furnishings in natural materials mirror the landscape. By moonlight, a different vista emerges, best viewed with binoculars. Curated objects celebrate the maker's mark: a print by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, ink drawings in riverbed pigments and Japanese bronze vases that converse with Ercol furniture and bespoke carpentry. Through a concealed door, descend into a realm where walls in earthy tones frame a yoga and cocktail room, both opening onto the terrace.
Outside
These sheltered gardens have been tended across generations. In the early 1920s, violets grown here were sent to Covent Garden. Decades later, a travelling rheumatologist planted seeds collected worldwide – amongst them, a Norfolk Island pine now thought to be the tallest on the UK mainland. Today, between heritage fruit trees you'll find an al fresco dining terrace, fire pit and hot tub that invite gathering and retreat. Try your hand at "walking across the Moho" on Coverack beach below, before exploring the nearby historic coves of Kynance and Cadgwith, or the Helford's woodland.

Rich in geology, botany and maritime heritage, this quintessential fishing village on the Lizard Peninsula occupies an idyllic corner of south Cornwall. Wildflowers bloom and its sheltered cove has earned marine conservation status for crystal-clear waters.

- By air Fly from London to Newquay Airport, just over an hour's drive from the house.

“Old Pine was built in 1923 on the site of a flower farm, where violets were grown and then sent by train to London´s Covent Garden Market. The house feels private and secluded in its grounds despite the fact that the beach is only a 100m walk from the garden gate and the village is only just beyond. ”
In the 1700s, Coverack was a thriving fishing village, its high cliffs offering a good vantage point to spot shoals of pilchards. The harbour that can be seen from the house dates back to this period and is made from local green serpentine stone. Coverack is still a working fishing village today, with boats coming and going as they land crab and lobster. Beyond this, ships can be spotted making their way to and from the channel ports and North America. From the windows, people have seen dolphins and whales in the bay and outside, the stars and Milky Way are visible on a clear night.
The south-facing slopes and warm climate of the Lizard Peninsula were ideal for flower growing, and this still remains the case. The gardens are home to a number of unusual trees and plants that wouldn't survive elsewhere in the UK, including the beautiful Norfolk Pine Tree which was grown from a seed brought back from New Zealand by a former owner. Guests are welcome to help themselves to fruit from the trees in the garden when in season, whether that’s apples, pears, quinces, plums or mulberries. Old Pine is a very special place, an ideal sanctuary in which to escape the pressures of modern life.
