Introduction
Constructed by local craftspeople on Perranporth’s flaxen dunelands, on an ancient plot once earmarked as the 17th century Droskyn tin mines, Stratum is a modern Cornish beach house that tips its slate hat to welcome in newcomers. Serenity reigns at this hideout on high designed for upside-down-inside-outside living, where a striking spacious living space projects out over the lawn in a twisted cantilever. This is a luxury self-catering home that's part coastal gallery, part family retreat.
Inside
As though balanced by some meditative Cornish giant, Stratum is coastal stone stacking in architectural form; a gravity-defying home where superstructure engineering hides beneath hand-tufted indigo rugs, floating staircases, and metallic orb chandeliers. A luxury self-catering beach house shaped from glass and stone, this Cornish getaway is truly at one with the elements. Despite the lashings of ethereal light from wraparound glass galore, Stratum still knows how to pack a cosy punch.
Outside
At Stratum, serenity reigns, morning cappuccinos are taken al fresco, the hot tub gurgles after hours, and the sea swell sends all to slumber. From balmy hazy summer seascapes to storm watching of a winter's day, Stratum, with its bird's eye vantage point means that you always know when to head for the surf. While little ones go shell hunting on bare morning beaches, eves are ended with barbecue skewers and s'mores whilst skies turn red above the Poldarkian countryside.

Perranporth is a spirited coastal town in the Poldarkian countryside, where surfers ride on ocean swells and en plein air painters sprinkle the cliff edges. With a three-mile beach to rival any tropical locale, Perranporth is a place where yoga studios and galleries live in harmony with rock pools and beach bars.

“As Stratum came together, and our thoughts turned to interiors, we found inspiration everywhere. The beach house pays homage to the local area, with paintings by a Cornish en plein air artist and sofas made by local hands.”
We purchased the land from Perranporth Golf Club, which adjoins the rear garden. Stratum was built on a virgin sand dune, which brings with it a hundred stories about its construction! Some 17th century maps showed mine shafts underneath our plot, which had been fenced off for more than 50 years; we conducted many mine-testing drills and reports on the site before we were given the all clear to build.
On day one, the experts were all proved wrong and we discovered no solid rock for the foundations to be built on. Piling was the only solution, making this a Cornish superstructure.
All materials for the build were sourced in Cornwall, including the natural grey stone from Trebarwith Quarry. We wanted a house that would withstand the test of time against the coastal weather, as well as being energy efficient, quiet, and cosy; a home that could be sympathetic to its surroundings, nestled into the sand dunes. Its close proximity to the sea means wave-watching with a morning coffee on the mezzanine can happen all year round. The sunsets are spectacular, too; we recommend that you try and see one from the hot tub with a glass of fizz in hand.

To Do
Perranporth Golf Club
One of the finest links courses in the UK, Perranporth Golf Club welcomes visitors with open arms. The challenging 18-hole course was designed by James Braid and straddles the sandy cliffside to dramatic effect. Tee times are available between 10am and 5.30pm (4pm in winter) so drop in to book - it’s literally on your backdoor.
To Eat
Alcatraz, Perranporth Beach
Take the ten-minute stroll across the dunes and down to this former WWII gun shelter turned pint-sized café and cocktail bar. Pull up a wicker armchair on the terrace for a sundowner in the shape of a St Ives Gin and Seabuck Tonic. By day, the café peddles fresh coffee, fruit smoothies and sweet treats from St Agnes’ Rustic Cakes.
To Do
South West Coast Path
If you need a break from the sunlounger, head north along the coast path and walk the three-mile stretch of Perranporth Beach through the dunes of Penhale Sands. In spring, white blossom shrouds the thorn bushes, while in summer you can follow the gorse-lined path to Holywell Beach for a dip followed by clotted cream ice-cream.
To Do
The Headland, Cornwall
The AquaClub at The Headland luxury resort is a swimming and wellbeing complex on Fistral Beach. The building, the pools, and the interiors celebrate the iconic landmark location on the edge of the Atlantic, whilst offering an Elemis spa, thermal spa, and aqua spa, plus wood-fired pizza, cocktails, and afternoon teas to round-off the trip.
