Introduction
In a barley-blonde Cotswold village recorded in the Domesday Book, Lantern House has witnessed generations of rural life. It lies within the Chipping Norton district, yet is moments from picturesque Burford. Here, hedgerow-stitched footpaths, fire-lit pubs and the seasonal cycles of field and farm compose a rhythm of slow country living, a tempo reflected in the cottage. This is a home shaped by the families who have loved it, the current owners having lived in it for 20 years and undertaken two phases of work to evolve the property. Stylish yet grounded, it embraces muddy wellies, muddier paws and a deep sense of rural tranquillity.
Inside
Lantern House is a dialogue between past and present. Around the original cottage, additional spaces have been gradually woven into its fabric, including a large lanterned sitting room with expansive glass doors that open onto the garden. Designed for family life and powered by an air source heat pump and solar PV, it offers practical yet inviting spaces, from the bright breakfast room and kitchen to the boot room and gym. Throughout this soulful three-bedroom home, bespoke furniture, antique treasures and curated artwork abound – from inherited oil paintings to Flos Taraxacum chandeliers rescued from a historic courthouse.
Outside
The garden has been thoughtfully designed to nurture biodiversity, with English wildflowers, a wildlife pond and a hedgehog tunnel and ladder that allow free movement between neighbouring gardens. There are ample spaces to unwind, including a hot tub area and an impressive bluestone dining table – perfect for long al fresco meals, perhaps local trout with grilled asparagus, cooked over the fire pit-cum-barbecue. Over the garden gate, idyllic Fifield invites gentle pottering. Beyond that lie pastoral landscapes aplenty, as well as a constellation of historic villages and towns, peppered with crooked independent shops and field-to-fork dining spots.
There are three bedrooms, two king-size and one zip-and-link. There is an en suite shower room and a family bathroom, in addition to a ground floor W/C.

“We are so pleased to welcome you to our home in the Cotswolds. A house of many parts, the oldest section is thought to date to the 1700s, with the first extension in the 1950s and further additions in 2005 and, most recently, 2025.”
We moved here in 2004, the year we were married, and our son was born two years later. We arrived separately for the first viewing, yet both said afterwards that we knew we were going to live here, even before stepping inside. There is a copy of the sales brochure in the sitting room which shows the house as it was when we bought it – it is now almost unrecognisable, but despite all the changes, it still has the same wonderful feeling when you walk in.
Having lived here happily for twenty years, we took the plunge and embarked on the final extension we had always wanted, creating the lanterned family room, the glazed front entrance hall, and the back kitchen and boot room. We also reconfigured the garden to make it more wildlife-friendly. The house now has a new level of sustainability – free of fossil fuels, it is run on an air source heat pump with solar PV, a battery and two EV chargers, with wildflowers and a wildlife pond.
It is a joy to live in – even returning home with muddy running shoes, wellies and dirty paws feels like a pleasure. In summer, we have all the doors open, enjoying the garden and relaxing with friends outside. In winter, it's long walks and a delicious brunch somewhere local, followed by settling down next to the fire.
