Introduction

In a state of disrepair when first discovered, this unique self-catering windmill near Beaumaris has since seen many years of tenderness; taking it from neglected flour-covered mill to luxury homestay. Inside, a mixture of art deco and 1970's influences meld to create contemporary living spaces with a lavish retro twist, while the alliance of island winds and mountain clouds perform sensational scenes across Anglesey’s skies and sea all around.  On cool nights, head to the hot tub, which will soon become part of a blissful bedtime routine before tucking into modish blankets to the distant sound of the sea.

Inside

A spiral staircase wends its way from the ground floor dining room (where you’ll find a table made from the windshaft's original gearing), past the two double bedrooms on the first and second floors, all the way to the cherry on top of the windmill's already magnificent cake. Bounded by 240 degrees of floor-to-ceiling windows, sink into the lounge's curved velvet sofa with a bottle of red and become enveloped in the ever-changing elements.

Outside

A sheltered walled garden follows the windmill’s round silhouette, where fragrant flower beds and two al fresco dining areas, facing both east and west to make the most of the sun’s rise and fall, can be found. Protected by a pretty dry stone wall, the garden's hot tub tempts long nights spent beneath the stars. The Isle of Anglesey Coastal Footpath joins Isla Windmill’s drive, leading in one direction to Puffin Island, the other to a white stone beach where cold-water swimming and fishing for supper guarantee rejuvenation.

From the owner

“We had a hard job getting the planning permission to convert this Grade II listed building into a home, but nonetheless won the case on appeal to the Welsh Government.”

From the owner

When we acquired Isla Windmill many years ago, it was derelict and dilapidated and had never been lived in. The restoration took a considerable time, and you may notice that there are, for example, no telegraph poles as they are all in ducts underground; nothing to spoil the view was the objective!

When I look at what the windmill is today, I am overwhelmed with pride. The sheer delight on guests faces when they first see it, along with the breathtaking views from the top floor; it makes me very happy indeed.

Make sure you look north for the family of buzzards and keep an eye out for foxes playing in the fields below.

There's plenty to do here, with miles of public footpaths and some testing hills if you’re a keen cyclist. For lovers of cold water swimming, the nearby beach is perfect for taking a dip throughout the year, with the waters warmed by the Gulf Stream. This spot also poses the perfect opportunity for keen fishers, where catching supper can almost be guaranteed.

All in all, an unusual property that you feel is a real privilege to stay in. The view from the top of the windmill is the real gem, with a wide angled a view of the sea and then the Snowdonian peaks all in one sweeping picture. It retains and respects many of the original features from the windmill´s working past that are cleverly left exposed, whilst still incorporating a new, warm, chic and homely vibe with attentive interior design.
