Figgy Court | Luxury Self-Catering Barn | West Sussex

Figgy Court

Billingshurst, West Sussex, UK

A 700-year old grain barn reinterpreted - this charming self-catering couples’ retreat affords a slice of country living on modern terms. Figgy Court occupies a utopian setting on the River Arun near Billingshurst, equidistant between the High Weald and South Downs AONB. Honey-hued oak beams and hand-crafted furnishings are a celebration of yesteryear, with little luxuries like the mezzanine bed dressed in goose down bedding and riverside hot tub adding lashings of rural romance.

Introduction

Approached via a winding path and etched upon a sylvan backdrop, this old grain store once served the mill next door but has undergone a sensitive restoration to offer luxury self-catering escapes for two. Rustic and warm by nature, Figgy Court has character bursting right through its double-height ceilings. Windows frame picture-perfect views over water meadows to one side and the old mill to the other (which can accommodate the extended family). Cradled by 600-square miles of rolling chalk downs, the surrounding National Park promises as much adventure as it does beauty - as Virginia Woolf once described it: "too much for one pair of eyes, enough to float a whole population in happiness”.

Inside

Ancient artistry shines through every time-worn feature of this luxury West Sussex barn. Original oak beams frame the open plan living space, like treacle tart latticed over ice-cream coloured walls and pillowed limestone floors keep up the weathered country character. A TV hides in a cleverly designed cupboard and a contemporary kitchen hints at the recent renovation. Accessed via a twisting hand-built staircase, the mezzanine bedroom is suspended over the living area and flaunts a king-size bed dressed in 600-thread count linen. After slow mornings entwined in the sheets with pile of Sunday papers, the luxury walk-in shower is sure to invigorate the weariest of souls.

Outside

With an owner passionate about gardening, the grounds are an Arcadia of classical country house style, from the babylon willows to perfectly pruned topiary. A French dining set sits atop a herringbone stone floor in the potted courtyard and makes an attractive spot for pastries and coffee in the sun. Listen out for the Kingfisher's whistle, calling for your attention from the river, and admire huge families of house martins swoop through the skies to return home as the evenings close in. Don't miss Cranleigh farmers' market, when local producers come together to proudly display their handiwork. Pick up Sussex-made bubbles and enjoy drawn-out games of Scrabble on the riverbed, legs dangling in the water and fizz chilling in the ice bucket beside.

From the owner

“The honey-coloured oak frame is a delight to behold, and makes Figgy Court a warm and inviting couples´ retreat all year round. ”

From the owner

Converted ten years ago from a farm building into what you see today, the history of the barn is closely linked to the 13th century mill which sits beside it, of which you have spectacular views. The barn has been part of our family home for 25 years, stayed in by friends and family alike.

Surrounded by the amazing rolling West Sussex countryside, it's hard to believe you are only an hour and a half from London.

The views over the water meadows and gardens are a sight to behold, our family have farmed here for three generations, and we hope our guests will love the tranquillity and beauty of the area as much as we do.

Wildlife surrounds you in this secluded location, ready to explore or just to relax in.
