Luxury self-catering cottages in Wells

A cathedral city in deepest Somerset, Wells has appeared in the history books since Roman times, getting its name from the natural springs for which the area is famed.

Wells flaunts a beautiful mosaic of rolling countryside, yellow-stone and historic towns, making it ideal for a restful short stay or a weekend spent exploring, shopping and touring. This is a small city and easy to get around, with a 13th century cathedral and award-winning twice weekly farmers market. Start your tour at the cathedral itself, placed close to the central Paupers Gate, Wells and Mendip Museum and the Bishop’s Palace, the latter having its own annual summer Garden Festival. Talking of festivals, the queen of them all, Glastonbury, is just seven miles away and a must for any bucket list.

Both charming and convenient, Wells is used by hikers as a base, finishing off a day's trek with a round of local cheddar and cool cider. Those wanting to explore Somerset will find a wealth of nearby attractions, such as Glastonbury Abbey, Fleet Air Museum and – if you're okay with soaring heights, confined spaces and amazing geological formations – Cheddar Gorge and Caves. At three miles long, this attraction has caves with pinnacles and stunning walks, and if you're not confident in the reality you can simply sit back, take a virtual tour and see it all from a 270-degree screen!

Stories from the hills

When we were kids, they were our Himalayas. The rivers were lava, and the ledges were crevasses, and there were always cheese sandwiches in the hamper. They’re still there, you know, those hills.
