Practically Magic: homes woven with romancePractically Magic: homes woven with romance

“Always throw spilled salt over your left shoulder. Keep rosemary by your garden gate. Plant lavender for luck, and fall in love whenever you can.” – So ends Practical Magic, the 1998 cult film whose recent return taps into a collective yearning for whimsy, ritual and rapture.

The story of the Owens sisters, played by Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, may be one of witchcraft, thwarted romance and a centuries-old family curse, but much of its aesthetic allure lies in its setting. Gothic romance is haunted as much by its architecture as its ghosts – from the locked rooms of Thornfield Hall in Jane Eyre to the shadowy corridors of Hillingham in Dracula – yet the Owens house casts a warmer spell. Their rambling Victorian coastal home is a place of comfort, where every embroidered textile, hand-painted cabinet and tendril of greenery that curls towards mullioned windows is laden with magic.

As the season turns towards Samhain, nights lengthen, stars sharpen in velvet-dark skies and the boundary between worlds is said to grow thin. Herbs hang drying in conservatories, candles burn low in rooms layered with antiques and shelves groan under the weight of ancient books. Taking our cue from this decidedly cosier form of gothic romance, here we cross the threshold into five homes woven with enchantment – where kitchens become sites of gathering, gardens teeter on the edge of the otherworldly and collected curios carry traces of those who came before.

Castle Trematonia

Within the turreted walls of Castle Trematonia, Mother Nature presides over all. Today, under the guardianship of House of Hackney founders Frieda Gormley and Javvy M Royle, the castle forms the threshold to what Frieda calls “a mythical land”. Botanical blooms climb the walls and collected heirlooms lend rooms a supernatural timelessness. In the garden, a medicinal apothecary plot flourishes amongst nine acres of rambling gardens. Tend bubbling stews in the Victorian-inspired deVOL kitchen, then prepare herbal infusions to sip in the light filled greenhouse – nature's nourishing wisdom gathered, transformed and savoured amongst friends and across generations.

The Tapestry

At The Tapestry, every inch of home and garden sings with the spirit of things gathered and grown. Roses and leafy tendrils clamber across the whitewashed 17th-century farmhouse and around the garden gate, imbuing it with the whimsical, slightly unruly romance of an English country garden. At its heart, an Aga warms a kitchen layered with antique pine, Delft tiles and botanical artworks; its long table made for conjuring up a round of midnight margaritas. In the terracotta snug, a writing desk awaits beside a roaring fire – just the place to pen a letter to a sister (or lover) far from home whilst the Cumbrian wind kisses at the windowpanes.

Windfall

GP4459

Enveloped within the Herefordshire’s spellbinding Dark Sky Territory, Windfall invites you to slip out of time. Within this former Victorian cider mill, mullioned windows frame the Black Mountains, walls are adorned with Welsh tapestries and botanical prints, and candlelight ripples across a table surrounded by heirloom chairs. Nearby Hay-on-Wye beckons to curious minds and appetites alike, with labyrinthine bookshops holding antiquarian volumes on botany, plant magic and regional folklore and antique markets laden with treasures. Return with provisions for supper, sink into the steaming hot tub, then cocoon with a book beneath embroidered quilts and timeworn beams.

Tincture

GP4461

Entirely off-grid and true to its name, Tincture distils the powers of fresh spring water, sunlight and seclusion into a remedy for city life. Here, enchantment lies in the small, earth-led rituals: feeding seasoned logs to the solid-fuel Rayburn, foraging for herbs in the biodiverse garden and watching toads hop across the brook that meanders along the Eastern boundary. Its 17th-century stone foundations hold a quiet, folkish magic, while timeworn objects bear traces of former lives and the typographer-owner’s word art peppers the walls like storied incantations. Come nightfall, only the dance of the firepit's flame interrupts darkness as the moon rises over the Cambrian Mountains.

Florin

GP4462

Florin embodies the "whimsigoth" aesthetic: a soaring silhouette of turrets rises high above the Welsh coast, whilst its Victorian bones conjure a bygone world of grandeur and intrigue. Within, bookcases swing open to reveal secret passageways and ornate candelabras cast a honeyed flicker across patterned walls, heavy drapes and silver trinkets. Beneath the brocade and sleight of hand lies a story of inheritance carried forward through treasured objects, including a Welsh dresser passed down through five generations and china gathered at auction by the owner’s grandmother. Beyond, rose-wrapped pathways disappear into five acres of secret gardens, where fountains murmur and leaves whisper tales as old as time.
