Draped in ruby vines, Scarlet Hall in Cheshire is one of the UK's most magical country house wedding venues. Here, we talk with owners Chris and Gail about what this special celebration home means to them.
Can you share how Scarlet Hall became a wedding destination?
We discovered Scarlet Hall at an auction back in 2004 and fell in love with it immediately. We had been searching for a period property with land near Chester, and Scarlet Hall was everything we were looking for and more. From the beginning, it had the feel of a true celebration home. It naturally brought people together, and it wasn’t long before friends and family began suggesting that it would make a beautiful wedding venue.
That encouragement, combined with the house’s inherent charm and capacity for hosting, made the transition into a wedding destination feel like a natural next step. Over the years, we’ve continued to evolve and enhance the experience we offer, always with the aim of making each celebration as seamless and special as possible.
What’s the history behind the property itself?
It was originally built circa 1640 as a timber-framed farmhouse. It's a Grade II- listed building and, when we first discovered it, much of its character was hidden beneath a modern façade, the beautiful old timbers completely concealed. Many of the outbuildings were derelict, and the house was in serious need of restoration.
Our goal throughout was to create a simple, classic, understated country look that blended modern comforts with traditional charm. As we stripped back the interiors, we uncovered and exposed many original timbers, which we highlighted using a palette of neutral tones and warm greys. Much of the furniture was sourced from local antique auctions, enhancing the timeless feel of the home.
As owners, what’s your favourite part about hosting weddings?
Without a doubt, witnessing the pure joy and emotion that fills the air. There’s something incredibly moving about seeing happy tears and knowing you’ve helped create a space where such beautiful memories are made. It’s a privilege to be part of such a meaningful time in people’s lives and we often joke that we love making people cry… with happiness, of course!
Every wedding is unique, and it’s magical to see how couples bring their own personalities to the venue. Scarlet Hall has a special kind of charm that seems to shape itself around each celebration – the property always adds something personal and unforgettable to the occasion.
How would you describe the atmosphere of your venue?
Relaxed yet refined country chic. Whether guests are planning an intimate gathering or a larger celebration of up to 100 guests, the venue strikes that rare balance between elegance and comfort. With accommodation for up to 22 guests, couples and their loved ones get to enjoy not just a single day, but an entire weekend together, making it feel like a celebration and a holiday all in one.
In the summer, the gardens come alive with lawn games, outdoor dining and long, relaxed debriefs under the sun. In the winter, the atmosphere transforms into something intimate and atmospheric.
Are there specific features of your property or landscape that couples consistently fall in love with?
The long driveway leading to the house – it builds a real sense of anticipation and excitement as guests arrive, setting the tone for the celebrations ahead. The barn is often described as magical, especially when the twinkle lights come on in the evening.
Inside the property, couples love the unexpected luxuries like the indoor swimming pool and the long dining table, which becomes a gathering place for shared meals, laughter and speeches that last well into the night.
Could you describe your accommodation?
It’s both luxurious and welcoming, designed to make guests feel instantly at home while adding a sense of occasion to the wedding weekend. The estate features 11 beautifully appointed bedrooms split between the main manor house and the coach house, offering a mix of blushing bedroom suites, relaxed communal spaces and easy breakaway areas for quiet moments.
One of the features couples particularly appreciate is the separation of the two barns, which allows for the tradition of not seeing each other the night before the wedding, adding a lovely touch of anticipation to the day. The master suite is a standout luxury space, complete with its own dressing room, freestanding bath, his and hers sinks and walk-in shower.
Do you offer catering?
Scarlet Hall is a dry hire venue, which means couples have the flexibility to tailor their catering experience to suit their personal tastes and style. While we don’t provide in-house catering, we work closely with a carefully curated list of recommended catering suppliers, all of whom are familiar with the venue and understand how to deliver exceptional service in our setting. These trusted partners have a proven track record of creating everything from elegant, multi-course wedding breakfasts to relaxed sharing-style feasts and street food-inspired evening bites.
This approach also gives couples the freedom to incorporate catering vans or food trucks if they’re looking for something a little more informal or unique – perfect for outdoor receptions, late-night snacks or a festival-style celebration.
Can you walk us through the different event spaces at your venue?
At Scarlet Hall, couples have exclusive use of the entire 12-acre estate. With a charming blend of historic character, luxurious comfort and open countryside, every space on the estate offers a unique moment within the wedding journey, whether you’re planning an intimate elopement or a celebration with up to 100 guests.
At the heart of the celebration is our beautifully restored rustic barn, where up to 100 guests can gather for the ceremony, dining and late-night dancing. With twinkling fairy lights and exposed beams, the barn is effortlessly romantic and atmospheric, no matter the season.
We also offer endless opportunities for outdoor weddings and al fresco celebrations. With five acres of sweeping lawns, a charming orchard and meadow paths, the grounds are ideal for everything from lawn games and outdoor lounges to ceremonies beneath the trees or photos bathed in golden hour light.
We often describe Scarlet Hall as “the wedding estate” because of how seamlessly it blends celebration and relaxation. The main manor house and adjacent coach house together provide luxurious bedrooms and a series of versatile indoor spaces. These include cosy snugs, open lounges and sociable dining areas, perfect for getting ready, hosting pre-wedding dinners or unwinding after the big day.
What unique amenities, experiences, or offerings can couples enjoy only at your venue?
One of the venue’s standout features is its balance of luxury and laid-back charm. Alongside the beautiful wedding barn, where couples can hold their ceremony and reception, guests have exclusive access to a range of exceptional amenities, including an indoor heated pool, sauna, games room, cinema room and table tennis. Outdoors, guests can enjoy croquet and rounders on the lawns, or make use of the outdoor kitchen for pre or post-wedding barbecues and relaxed gatherings.
For weddings of over 31 guests, we also include the services of a dedicated wedding planner, who works with couples for the six weeks leading up to the big day, ensuring everything runs smoothly and stress free. It’s a rare combination of privacy, flexibility, luxury and personal service.
How do you ensure a stress-free and joyful planning experience for couples from initial enquiry through to the wedding day?
As owner-hosts, we offer complimentary viewings of Scarlet Hall, giving couples the chance to explore the venue at their own pace, ask questions and start envisioning how their celebration might unfold. These viewings also allow us to begin building a relationship with each couple; something we believe is key to creating a truly memorable and tailored experience.
For those looking for hands-on support when booking up to 80 guests, we also offer the services of Dale Alexander Events in the six weeks leading up to the wedding and on the day itself. Dale brings calm, experience and creative flair, ensuring everything runs smoothly.
With a blend of personal attention, clear guidance and professional support, we ensure that every couple feels not just well looked after but genuinely excited for their celebration at Scarlet Hall.
How would you describe the style of weddings your venue naturally attracts or excels at hosting?
The property particularly lends itself to rustic, whimsical and country-chic weddings. The timeless charm of the historic house, paired with the laid-back elegance of the event barn and beautiful landscaped gardens, creates the perfect backdrop for couples who want a celebration that feels warm, authentic and full of character.
From outdoor ceremonies and al fresco dining under festoon lights to candlelit dinners and cosy winter gatherings with fires lit throughout the house, Scarlet Hall effortlessly adapts to the season and the couple's unique style.
Are there any exciting new developments, improvements or future plans couples can look forward to at your venue?
We’re always looking for ways to enhance the experience for our couples and their guests, and we’re passionate about continuously evolving the property while maintaining its timeless charm and relaxed atmosphere.
One of our latest additions is a newly completed jetty, which offers a tranquil backdrop for wedding day photography. Nestled within the grounds, it’s a romantic spot that perfectly captures the natural beauty of the estate.
We also take great pride in the seasonal transformation of our gardens. With a keen personal interest in gardening, we love curating and enhancing the landscape throughout the year. Whether it’s spring blossoms, lush summer borders or rich autumn tones, the ever-changing garden provides a dynamic and beautiful setting.
