Saxon | Luxury Self-Catering Manor | Stow-on-the-Wold, Cotswolds

Saxon

Maugersbury, Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire, The Cotswolds, UK

A mile from the market town of Stow-on-the-Wold, Saxon's story spans a millennium. It has witnessed the Norman Conquest, weathered the Dissolution of the Monasteries, withstood the Civil War and, according to literary lore, once hosted Jane Austen. Beyond its sweeping saga, this luxury self-catering home is above all a place of air and light. Following an ambitious restoration, the manor fuses heritage with modern romance  from the formal gardens and hot tub to four-poster beds and freestanding baths.

Book

Introduction

In the quiet Anglo-Saxon village of Maugersbury lies an estate that has evolved over centuries. From 708 AD until 1537, the house belonged to Evesham Abbey before passing into private hands. Substantially rebuilt in the 17th century and refined by the Georgians, it eventually fell into decline. In 2017, new owners embarked on a meticulous restoration project, transforming the Grade II-listed building into an elegant family home. Open for select weeks throughout the year, the manor welcomes guests through a grand stone porch with a 13th century arched doorway – a threshold between past and present.

Inside

Mullioned windows, soaring ceilings and timber staircases are proud hallmarks of Saxon’s past. In its latest guise, the atmosphere captures a balance of grandeur and grace. An open-plan kitchen-dining room and atrium welcome sunlit mornings, while evenings invite retreat – perhaps a book by the fire or a film in the snug. A chalky palette allows the shifting light to sing, enhanced by curated antique furniture and art, from Karl Blossfeldt photography to Impressionist oil paintings. Upstairs, six bedrooms welcome deep restoration, with four-poster beds draped in soft linen, and a William Holland copper spa bath presiding in the master.

Outside

Beyond Saxon's barley-blonde limestone walls lies carefully restored gardens. Here, expansive lawns unfurl beneath mature trees, and quiet corners invite you to take in the views across rolling Cotswolds valleys. Days pass gently, measured by the shifting light as apricot mornings and honeyed afternoons melt into dusk. With no city glow to intrude, night reveals a sky scattered with stars, its constellations best observed from the warmth of the hot tub. Despite its peaceful seclusion, the manor is just a short walk from Stow-on-the-Wold and close to Daylesford Farm and Soho Farmhouse – if you can tear yourself away.

From the owner

“What we love most here is the light. It streams into the garden room, softens through the sitting rooms, and falls across the valley in ever-changing shades of gold and rose. At night, the skies are dark and still, and sleep comes deeply.”

From the owner

The village of Maugersbury was first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, and the manor itself has been at the heart of the parish for centuries. Once belonging to Evesham Abbey, the house later passed to the Chamberlayne family, who rebuilt it in the mid-1600s and lived here for nearly 300 years. Over time, it has been many things – from a school to a set of flats – but it has always remained an important part of local history.

Legend has it that Cromwell’s soldiers camped in the gardens during the Civil War, and that Jane Austen stayed here as a guest, perhaps finding inspiration in this quiet hamlet just a short walk from bustling Stow-on-the-Wold.

When we found the house in 2017, she was tired. We spent two years carefully restoring her, rewiring, replumbing, repairing every window, and returning the house to her original character. Today, Saxon remains both historic and deeply lived-in, a place of heritage and comfort, art and homeliness.
