Textile tales with Amy Brock Morgan

I grew up on Cornwall's south coast, where my earliest memories are woven with sea air, sandy picnics and the creative spirit of our family farm. There, I was taught that our belongings have multiple lives and repairing them is essential. From watching my mother craft our clothes to discovering the sewing machine at a young age, textiles have been a common thread throughout my life. Today, I channel this into my work as a textile artist, creating commissioned wall hangings as well as leading the 'Lived and Loved' repair team at B Corp outdoor brand Finisterre.

After finishing art school, I spent time travelling through India, Indonesia and Central America. I lived by the sea, surfing, snorkelling and working. These experiences inspired me to study Environmental Science, where I graduated with First Class Honours. This led me to dive deeper into my passion for protecting what is around us, working at the Marine Biological Association and RSPB. Eventually, my artistic roots called to me, and I started making textile work focused on the issues I was seeing within the ocean around waste streams.

My work draws from Cornwall's ley lines, rock formations, cycles of nature and the awe I hold for the ancient and eternal dance between land and sea, creating pieces that capture the strength and beauty of the landscape I call home. My philosophy centres on sustainability and community, using repurposed and revived fabrics to reduce the need for new production while running workshops that bring people together to learn traditional techniques like darning, embroidery, and sashiko. The more people I can inspire to pick up a needle and thread, the better – for them, and Earth! I believe in the meditative quality of working with textiles.

As an explorer at heart, my creativity flows from barefoot wanderings along hidden coves and peaceful moments in nature. Whether at home or abroad, I always seek out the quietest places where few people venture. Each commissioned work is a deeply personal collaboration, designed to transport viewers to their own sense of place through stories, carefully chosen fabrics and thoughtful composition.

One of my recent projects was a bespoke piece commissioned by the Unique Homestays interiors team for Penny Black Cottage in Dartmoor, created this spring as part of its relaunch. This collaboration allowed me to capture the essence of the Dartmoor landscape while incorporating elements of the cottage's own connection to the area.

Looking ahead to 2025, I will be hosting a series of workshops across Cornwall, combining wild walks, drawing, and flag making; a perfect blend of my love of nature and textile art. Monthly repair workshops will continue in London at the Finisterre store and across Cornwall where I will host them, sharing my passion for sustainable craftsmanship within a growing repair community.
