Christmas is an important time of expression: of love with under-the-mistletoe kisses, gratitude with handcrafted gifts, and celebration with popping corks and fizzing glasses. And home is often at the heart of it all; a place where treasured holiday rituals unfold under one merry roof. Here, we step inside some of our Christmas homes, revealing the ways in which festive styling transcends mere baubles and tinsel to become an expression of ourselves and the traditions we hold so dear.
The Knapp, the Cotswolds
The Knapp embraces a traditional festive scheme, where the cottage's quintessential bones are woven with classic greens and reds. Reflective of owner and interior designer Natasha's Hungarian roots, the space feels folky with the addition of bells, bows, paper fans and precious ornaments accumulated throughout her life.
Ukiyo, Cornwall
Ukiyo is a Cornish beach house with a contemporary twist, and its Christmas styling is a direct mirror of its coastal location and sleek design. Classicism is cast aside – instead, a natural, sandy palette is introduced through the addition of clusters of dried pampas and honesty.
Honeystone, Suffolk
Honeystone is a palatial manor house whose festive decorations have to stand up against an impressive backdrop of Rococo-esque wall coverings and ornate furniture. Here, tables lie adorned with artistic centrepieces of fruit and silverware; whilst grand mantlepieces lie draped in foraged flora.
The Fable, Cornwall
The Fable, an idyllic thatch, embraces a true The Holiday cottage Christmas. Its wibbly walls, snow-white interiors and crackling wood-burner the perfect setting for boughs of pine and eucalyptus, and tree decorated with dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks and pine cones.
Castle Trematonia, Cornwall
House of Hackney’s castle is as whimsical and flamboyant at Christmastime as one might expect. Leopard-print bows embellish door wreaths; crimson berries climb bannisters; and traditional baubles are replaced with hanging velvet toadstools and suited giraffes.
Charlotte’s Folly, Shropshire
This pretty-in-pink bolthole, inspired by a former lady of the estate, puts a fairytale spin on festive aesthetics. Behind its gingerbread house exterior lies a table bursting with edible goodies like Turkish delight – in real The Chronicles of Narnia fashion – and striped walls aglow with candlelight.
