This month, beneath endless blue skies and long, sun-soaked days, we celebrate the great British summer. Fittingly, today's story sets its scene in Cornwall. Mousehole, specifically – one of the county's most charming seaside villages, gathered around a mouse-hole-sized harbour. Speaking with property owner Danny, whose decades-long romance with the region began in boyhood, we discover how this quiet inlet of West Cornwall – with its candlelit cottages and timeless character – inspired him to create a place where his own family could continue making memories for years to come.
“We've been visiting Cornwall since I was a child,” Danny explains. “And finding our own place here was always a dream.” It’s a vision shared by many, drawn by Cornwall's natural beauty, slower pace and enduring sense of community. “When we started our search, we looked at many properties, but nothing felt right,” he continues. “Until we viewed Kailani. Within about ten seconds of walking in, we knew it was the one. The proximity to the ocean and the character of the cottage were exactly what we'd been looking for.”
It's those very qualities that make Kailani so special. Once home to a village fisherman, stepping inside its historic walls, you are at once brought back to days gone by. Summers of children splashing waist-deep with gulls soaring overhead, and winters where blackening skies and ferocious storms spit at the harbour walls. On its seasonal appeal, Danny reflects, “I love calm evenings by the fire, watching the weather roll in from the warmth of the cottage. Winter has its own charm, with the famous Christmas lights, cosy pubs and evenings by candlelight.”
“We refurnished the whole property throughout,” Danny continues. It remains humble, but has been reimagined with love: original stone walls which still carry honest tactility, now painted sea spray-white. Hints of mackerel-grey and driftwood-brown emerge in velvet sofas, crumpled bed linens and antique furniture such as desks and stools – which, too, bear a kind of sea-kissed patina, as though salvaged from the shoreline.
“We rebuilt the back garden to make it a more usable space,” Danny adds. “And integrated an outdoor William Holland spa bath and seating area.” The fisherman of days past would never have believed that his harbour cottage could one day become such a place of retreat – once a humble dwelling used to salt mackerel. A second al fresco terrace resides where the salting ponds belonging to the row of cottages once lay, directly overlooking the water’s edge. “This is my favourite space,” Danny enthuses. “Coffee here on a summer morning, or drink at sunset, is just perfect," with views cast right the way to iconic landmark, St Michael's Mount.
In an enviable position just moments from the heart of the village – peppered with restaurants, cafés and pubs – July evenings are spent strolling from the cottage for plates of grilled local scallops beside the sea, before calling in at the inn on the corner for a local stout and stumbling home. "We're so lucky to have that balance of wonderful eateries and drink spots nearby," Danny adds. Beyond Mousehole, the best of West Cornwall is within easy reach – the art and foodie hubs of Penzance and Newlyn, the azure waters of Pedn Vounder and Porthcurno, and the rugged coastal path stretching all the way to Land's End.
