Luxury self-catering holiday cottages in Mawnan Smith

Tucked in from the south Cornish coast, this hamlet sits on a crossroads and was once a centre for blacksmiths tending the passing horses. Now it's a sleepy town with thatched cottages and lush gardens.

The inland position of Mawnan Smith is a haven for boat-lovers on the Helford River who meander up-stream for a visit. The pretty church dates back to the 15th century; its prime position overlooking the waters made it a crucial watchtower. In the thatched Red Lion you can indulge in lunch or dinner, while also using the building as a starting point for a stunning circular route winding through farmland, via two sub-tropical gardens. Glendurgan has a rope swing and maze, while Trebah is bursting with exotic blooms thriving in the mild climate.

If it's beaches you long for, Maenporth's gentle curve has a café and soft sands, while the broader sweep of Gyllyngvase is a short drive further north. Maenporth is the base for Falmouth Surf School, and sports fans can hire kayaks and stand-up paddleboards or book lessons. Back on dry land, there are footpaths for walkers in all seasons, through meadows and valleys, over stiles and along coastal paths. Savvy planners will ensure the route passes Budock Vean Hotel for a delectable cream tea, before walking the rest of the trail back to the village.
