Luxury holiday cottages in France

Designer beaches in the south, skiing in the Alps and fields of wine and lavender: the second largest country in the continent has stunning scenery and great food. Bring empty baskets to stock up on all that bon fromage…

From coast to coast, France has different territories to suit all visitors, but there is one constant factor: good food in abundance. Book a stately chateau for a group party then go wine-tasting in the vineyards of the Languedoc, Beaujolais or Bordeaux. Provence is the place for a homestay by lavender fields, in villages edged with fluffy lines of scented purple: perfect for a peaceful flower walk. Stroll out to buy breakfast from local bakeries every morning as they turn out sticks of soft, fragrant bread. Meanwhile in the east, the rugged Alps pack a skiing punch in winter months.

In the south, mountains meet the chic south-eastern beaches of Nice, St Tropez and Cannes, with their seafood cafés and sparkling waters housing sleek yachts. Hire a car and brace for hairpin bends as you explore mountain towns such as Grasse, the perfume capital full of scented factories. Out west, a cottage in Toulouse will make a fine base to replicate the region's 'cassoulet' stew (or simply sample it in a restaurant!). For classic romantics, an apartment in Paris is the place for Seine walks and happy snaps in front of the Eiffel Tower. Say cheese!
