Over Haddon

A sleepy village sitting right on a river in the middle of the romantic Peak District: the perfect setting for dale walks and country rambles.

Guests tucking into the storybook stone cottages in this tiny village will no doubt have spent the day out trekking the hills and dales of the Peak District National Park. Dotted with stately homes, castles and gardens, there is plenty to discover on non-walking days, as well as local goodies to replenish energies. Over Haddon is a mere stone's throw from Bakewell – home of the famous almond tart and second-largest town in the Peaks. Be sure to pick up a bag from a bakery to munch on the circular Over Haddon walk, crossing over stiles and through pretty field gates.

Nearby Haddon Hall houses a Summer Artisan Market with an array of stalls and crafts. The house makes a great day out for historians; parts of it date back to the 12th century, and its beauty has made it a popular film set for movies such as Jane Eyre and The Princess Bride. Buxton's spa town has welcomed guests since Roman times; take a guided tour to explore its aqua history. The River Lathkill runs through Over Haddon, often dry in summer but giving home to bird species such as mallards and moorhens; bring good binocs to spot the locals.
